Ascites is the accumulation of fluid in the abdomen, usually caused by diseases such as cirrhosis, heart failure, and malignancy. When ascites becomes refractory to fluid restriction and diuretics, regular abdominal paracentesis is commonly performed. This review provides an overview of the indications, complications, proper technique, fluid drainage, drain removal, and complication reduction in paracentesis procedures.
Ascites refers to the collection of fluid in the abdomen. This occurs as a result of several disease processes, including cirrhosis, heart failure, and malignancy. Ascites refractory to fluid restriction and diuretics is commonly managed with regular abdominal paracentesis. This review provides an overview of the in-dications for paracentesis, complication rates, correct performance of the procedure, drainage of fluid, removal of the drain, and minimization of complications.(c) 2022 Elsevier Inc.
