Evidence and Stability Field of fcc Superionic Water Ice Using Static Compression

Gunnar Weck et al.

Summary: The structural transformation of hot dense water ice is investigated in this study. The transition from body-centered-cubic to face-centered-cubic oxygen atoms sublattices is observed and a phase diagram is disclosed. Additionally, the stability field of the body-centered-cubic superionic ice is constrained. The current understanding of warm dense water ice based on ab initio simulations is also discussed.

Dynamic compression of Ce and Pr with millisecond time-resolved X-ray diffraction

Earl F. I. I. I. I. I. I. O'Bannon et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of compression rate on the volume collapse phase transitions in cerium and praseodymium, revealing kinetic differences between the two materials. The transition in cerium cannot be overdriven in pressure, indicating a fast kinetic process, while fast compression rates in praseodymium result in a shift of the phase boundary to higher pressures, suggesting slower kinetics possibly due to the realization of a new crystal structure.

Broad Elastic Softening of (Mg,Fe)O Ferropericlase Across the Iron Spin Crossover and a Mixed-Spin Lower Mantle

A. S. J. Mendez et al.

Summary: The study reveals the elastic bulk modulus softening of (Mg,Fe)O ferropericlase across the iron spin crossover and its significant impact on the physical properties. Experimental and computational results show that the softening effect is sensitive to the distribution of iron in the ferropericlase structure. Mixed-spin (Mg,Fe)O dominates the lower mantle at depths below 1,000 km.

In situ x-ray diffraction study of dynamically compressed α-cristobalite using a dynamic diamond anvil cell

M. O. Schoelmerich et al.

Summary: In this study, the dynamic compression of alpha-cristobalite was performed using a dynamic diamond anvil cell, and the in situ high-pressure phase transitions were investigated. The results show that the pressure onset of the phase transformation depends on the compression rates and stress conditions, and increasing compression rates shift the phase transitions to higher pressures. Additionally, under hydrostatic conditions, a phase transition from cristobalite X-I to seifertite is suppressed at pressures up to 82 GPa.

Summary: In this study, nanosecond compression by a high-power laser is utilized to investigate the metastability limit of liquid water under nearly isentropic compression. The results show that the limit is at least 8 GPa, higher than previously reported values at lower loading rates. Both experimental data and theoretical-computational analysis support this finding.
