Evaluating machine learning models for sepsis prediction: A systematic review of methodologies

Hong-Fei Deng et al.

Summary: Studies on sepsis prediction using machine learning have been rapidly developing in medical science. This review proposes new evaluation criteria and reporting standards to assess the quality of 21 qualified machine learning models based on PRISMA. The assessment reveals inconsistencies in the definition of sepsis, variations in data sources, preprocessing methods, machine learning models, feature engineering, and inclusion types among the studies. The study also identifies that using machine learning as a feature engineering tool improves the AUROC value, and deep neural networks combined with Sepsis-3 diagnostic criteria yield better results in time series data of sepsis patients.

The harm of class imbalance corrections for risk prediction models: illustration and simulation using logistic regression

Ruben van den Goorbergh et al.

Summary: This study examined the effect of correcting class imbalance on the performance of logistic regression models and found that methods such as random undersampling, random oversampling, and SMOTE did not improve model performance and resulted in poorly calibrated models. Imbalance correction did not enhance the ability of the models to distinguish between patients with and without the outcome event.

Temporal Differential Expression of Physiomarkers Predicts Sepsis in Critically Ill Adults

Akram Mohammed et al.

Summary: In this study, physiological markers extracted from continuous bedside monitoring were found to be temporally and differentially expressed in septic patients. Using this information, minimalistic artificial intelligence models can be developed to predict sepsis earlier in critically ill patients.

The features of the typical traumatic brain injury patient in the ICU are changing: what will this mean for the intensivist?

Virginia F. J. Newcombe et al.

Summary: Traditionally, TBI has been viewed as affecting younger, predominantly male patients involved in high speed accidents, but there is now a growing number of elderly patients over 65 sustaining TBI from low speed falls. Management decisions for TBI patients should take into account frailty, comorbidities, and extracranial injuries. Multimodal monitoring may offer a more personalized approach to managing this complex patient group in the future.

Characteristics of Sepsis-2 septic shock patients failing to satisfy the Sepsis-3 septic shock definition: an analysis of real-time collected data

Joris Vermassen et al.

Summary: One in five patients with septic shock according to the Sepsis-2 consensus definition is no longer considered as such when the Sepsis-3 shock criteria are applied. Factors associated with no longer being identified as having septic shock by the Sepsis-3 criteria include respiratory infection, medical admission reason, and absence of chronic liver disease.
