Prevalence of antibiotic-resistant organisms among hospitalized patients at a tertiary care center in Lebanon, 2010-2018

Moustafa Moussally et al.

Summary: The study describes the temporal trends of resistance of selected pathogens among hospitalized patients at a tertiary care center in Lebanon. Data show that CRAB decreased significantly from 2013 to 2018, while CREC, MRSA, and VRE showed statistically significant increasing temporal trends. These findings are helpful in characterizing and controlling antimicrobial resistance epidemiology in Lebanon.

Hypoalbuminemia as Surrogate and Culprit of Infections

Christian J. Wiedermann

Summary: Hypoalbuminemia is associated with the severity and complications of infectious diseases. The oxidation and breakdown of albumin affect its interactions with bioactive lipid mediators, impacting antimicrobial defense and repair processes. Low serum albumin can serve as a prognostic indicator for infectious complications in patients.

Summary: Current literature suggests a male preference (59%) in the distribution of VRE BSI cases. Further primary studies should address the question of male-specific factors favoring the enhanced frequency of VRE BSI.

Summary: In this study, a predictive score system (PREVENT score) was developed to assess VRE persistence in patients with a history of previous VRE colonization, providing a rapid risk assessment tool in hospitals for implementing targeted and cost-effective infection control measures.
