The built environment as determinant of childhood obesity: A systematic literature review

Diego Malacarne et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the epidemiological evidence on the relationship between the built environment and childhood obesity, finding strong associations between traffic-related air pollution and built environment characteristics supportive of walking with childhood obesity. However, a lack of studies considering interactions between different built environment exposures and verifying the role and mechanism of important effect modifiers, such as age, was identified.

Individual, parental and built environmental features as influencing factors of active travel to school in northeast China: findings from a cross-sectional study

Yinuo Wang et al.

Summary: The study explored the factors associated with active travel to school (ATS) in northeast China at the individual, parental, and built environment levels. The findings indicate that factors such as perceived weight, perceived ease of walking short distances, maternal unemployment, higher land use mix, and higher density of public transport stations are positively associated with increased likelihood of ATS. On the other hand, higher household income and ownership of private vehicles are negatively associated with the possibility of ATS.

Associations between Park and Playground Availability and Proximity and Children's Physical Activity and Body Mass Index: The BEACH Study

Javier Molina-Garcia et al.

Summary: This cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate the relationship between the availability and proximity to parks and playgrounds and physical activity, active commuting, and body mass index in children. The study found a positive association between the number of parks and playgrounds and children's physical activity levels, as well as a negative relationship between distance to the nearest playground and physical activity. Additionally, the study found that the number of playgrounds was positively related to active commuting, while park land area was negatively related to body mass index.

Associations between Children's Physical Activity and Neighborhood Environments Using GIS: A Secondary Analysis from a Systematic Scoping Review

Melody Smith et al.

Summary: Regular participation in physical activity is crucial for children's physical, mental, and cognitive health. The characteristics of neighborhood environments play an important role in supporting children's physical activity behaviors, including connectivity, population density, and the availability of diverse destinations. Proximity to school and safe traffic environments are also significant factors in promoting children's active travel behaviors.

Associations between the streetscape built environment and walking to school among primary schoolchildren in Beijing, China

Xiaoge Wang et al.

Summary: This study uses travel data and street view imagery from Beijing to explore the non-linear associations between built environment attributes and the likelihood of walking to school for children. The study finds that children from higher-income families are more likely to walk to school in neighborhoods with lower walkability, while higher street enclosure is associated with higher odds of walking for all respondents. Additionally, there is a non-linear negative relationship between the odds of walking and street safety facilities. The ownership of household cars, educational attainment of parents, and household annual income also modify the association between the built environment and walking to school.

Mortality risk associated with greenness, air pollution, and physical activity in a representative US cohort

Carver J. Coleman et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the associations between greenness, air pollution, physical activity and mortality risk. It finds that air pollution and physical inactivity are strongly associated with mortality risk, while greenness has a smaller impact. The protective effect of greenness is the strongest for highly active individuals, while more physically active individuals may have a higher risk from air pollution.

Psychological benefits of outdoor physical activity in natural versus urban environments: A systematic review and meta-analysis of experimental studies

Claire Wicks et al.

Summary: Outdoor physical activity in natural environments has more positive effects on psychological outcomes compared to urban environments. The varying effect sizes in the meta-analyses may be due to different mechanisms of psychological gains experienced during nature-based physical activities.

Creation of a rough runnability index using an affordance-based framework

Aateka Shashank et al.

Summary: This study explores the impact of built environment features on running activity, creating a runnability index to quantify how the built environment facilitates or hinders running for leisure or sport. Using pixelated edges in Surrey, Canada, areas near downtown and high traffic routes were found to have lower safety and runnability, while areas near parks and low traffic residential areas were safer for runners. Representing runnability with pixelated edges allows for a detailed analysis of the running experience at a sub-block level.

Nowhere to Go: Parents' Descriptions of Children's Physical Activity During a Global Pandemic

Deanna Perez et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 shelter-in-place mandates had varied effects on children's physical activity, with restrictions on opportunities while also highlighting the importance of access to outdoor spaces and equipment. Families with lower socioeconomic status reported less access to outdoor spaces, leading to fewer physical activity opportunities for their children. Parental involvement and encouragement were crucial factors in supporting children's physical activity during this time.

Socio-demographic determinants of physical activity and app usage from smartphone data

Francesca Pontin et al.

Summary: Utilizing secondary data from a commercial app incentivizing physical activity, this study explores patterns of app usage and activity behavior among users, finding higher usage rates among females, individuals aged 25-50, and those residing in areas with a lower socioeconomic status. The research also identifies longer-term usage patterns with age, and male users are more likely to meet physical activity guidelines despite females recording longer daily activity duration. Additionally, key weekly and seasonal trends in physical activity are revealed.
