Rebuilding historic urban neighborhoods after disasters: Balancing disaster risk reduction and heritage conservation after the 2015 earthquakes in Nepal

Patrick Daly et al.

Summary: The 2015 Nepal earthquakes brought severe damage to the Kathmandu Valley, highlighting the challenges of conserving architectural heritage in historic neighborhoods while rapidly rebuilding. This paper examines the transformation of traditional housing during the post-earthquake reconstruction of four historic neighborhoods. The findings suggest that seismic safety building codes and the incorporation of modern technology led to changes in the tangible cultural heritage of Kathmandu's historic urban neighborhoods, but also improved seismic safety.

Influence of below-threshold rainfall on landslide occurrence based on Japanese cases

Soichi Kaihara et al.

Summary: This study analyzed historical critical rainfall events triggering landslides in Japan and found that whether the critical rainfall level was exceeded or not had a significant impact on the probability of landslides. Additionally, even if the critical rainfall was not exceeded, rainfall events exceeding the critical rainfall level could still occur one to two days before the landslide. The evaluation of the landslide early warning system in Japan revealed certain accuracy issues in predicting landslide occurrences.

A bibliometric analysis of cultural heritage research in the humanities: The Web of Science as a tool of knowledge management

Ionela Vlase et al.

Summary: Substantial research has been conducted on cultural heritage over the past two decades, but there is still a lack of comprehensive analysis on the publication output volume and its correlation to the cultural heritage regime. This article aims to understand the role of Web of Science (WOS) in academia by analyzing scholarly output volume and the intellectual structure of cultural heritage research. The research found that cultural heritage research indexed in WOS is Eurocentric, with a limited number of European institutions and authors dominating the field.

A geodatabase of historical landslide events occurring in the highlyurbanized volcanic area of Campi Flegrei, Italy

Giuseppe Esposito et al.

Summary: This study presents the geological hazards in the densely populated Campi Flegrei volcanic area in southern Italy. Volcanic and seismic activities, combined with landslides, floods, and coastal erosion, have significantly influenced the landscape of this region. The research data reveals that landslides are most frequent along the coastline and western-facing inland slopes. The frequency of deadly events has decreased since the early 1980s, indicating a reduced risk to the population in the Campi Flegrei caldera.
