Strategic Infarct Locations for Poststroke Depressive Symptoms: A Lesion- and Disconnection-Symptom Mapping Study

Nick A. Weaver et al.

Summary: This study used lesion-symptom mapping to identify infarct locations and white matter disconnections associated with poststroke depressive symptoms (PSDS). The results showed that infarcts in the right amygdala, right hippocampus, and right pallidum were consistently associated with PSDS. Disconnectome-based analyses revealed disconnections in the right parahippocampal white matter, right thalamus and pallidum, and right anterior thalamic radiation were significantly associated with PSDS.

Neural Substrates of Poststroke Depression: Current Opinions and Methodology Trends

Chensheng Pan et al.

Summary: This review provides updates on the recent advances in understanding the neural basis of poststroke depression (PSD) and emphasizes its significant impact on functional outcome and mortality in stroke survivors. Through various techniques such as lesion analysis, structural and functional analyses, connectome analysis, and clinical trials, our knowledge and understanding of the neural substrates for PSD are increasing, which may have implications for risk stratification and personalized therapeutic target identification in the future.

Mapping lesion, structural disconnection, and functional disconnection to symptoms in semantic aphasia

Nicholas E. Souter et al.

Summary: Patients with semantic aphasia following left hemisphere stroke often have impaired control of semantic retrieval and executive dysfunction. This study found that the deficits in semantic cognition were associated with infarctions in distributed left-hemisphere regions, while executive dysfunction was linked to adjacent but distinct left frontoparietal clusters. Furthermore, performance on executive tasks was related to interhemispheric structural disconnection, while poor semantic cognition was associated with left-lateralized structurally disconnected clusters.

The emergent properties of the connected brain

Michel Thiebaut de Schotten et al.

Summary: Brain connections go beyond signal transmission and play a crucial role in behavior and cognition. They determine the brain's functional organization and contribute to understanding brain evolution and cognitive differences. Pathologies affect connections, leading to cognitive dysfunction, and the prediction of long-term symptoms is now based on brain disconnections.

Structural disconnection-based prediction of poststroke depression

Chensheng Pan et al.

Summary: This study aimed to identify the strategic SDC pattern for poststroke depression (PSD) at three months poststroke and evaluate its predictive value. The findings suggest that a strategic SDC pattern involving multiple lobes bilaterally is associated with PSD. The SDC score is an independent predictor of PSD and improves the predictive performance of the model.

Risk and Predictors of Depression Following Acute Ischemic Stroke in the Elderly

Naomi Mayman et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively evaluated predictors of poststroke depression (PSD) in the United States compared to post-myocardial infarction (MI) depression, finding that ischemic stroke patients were significantly more likely to develop depression. The strongest predictor of PSD was history of anxiety, while being discharged home was the most protective factor. Female patients, White patients, and patients under 75 years of age were more likely to be diagnosed with depression after stroke.
