Physiotherapists' views on their role in self-management approaches: A qualitative systematic review

Clare Killingback et al.

Summary: The study found that for self-management approaches to be effective, patients need to actively participate, and physiotherapists need to establish high-quality patient-therapist relationships to support patients in self-managing long-term conditions. Additionally, competing paradigms may either facilitate or hinder the implementation of self-management, so it is important to consider this in practice.

Stroke survivors' perceptions of participating in a high repetition arm training trial early after stroke

Ulrike Hammerbeck et al.

Summary: The study found that high repetition arm training early after stroke was acceptable to participants, as stroke survivors participated despite high levels of fatigue in hopes of personal benefit or benefiting future patients. Participants reported physical improvements, psychological benefits, improved understanding of their condition, as well as a sense of hope and distraction from the intervention.

Understanding 'context' in realist evaluation and synthesis

Joanne Greenhalgh et al.

Summary: This study reviews how context is conceptualised within realist reviews and evaluations, identifying two key 'narratives' in the way context was understood. One narrative sees context as observable features that trigger or block interventions, while the other views context as relational and dynamic features shaping intervention mechanisms. These different narratives have implications for the design, goals, and impact of realist reviews and evaluations.

Stroke self-management and the role of self-efficacy

Melissa Nott et al.

Summary: This study examined the impact of a 12-week stroke self-management program on occupational performance and satisfaction, finding significant improvements in both areas. Self-efficacy was identified as a key mediator for these improvements. Thematic analysis revealed barriers and facilitators related to transitioning home, returning to normal activities, and reflecting on shared experiences.

Goal attainment, adjustment and disengagement in the first year after stroke: A qualitative study

L. Scobbie et al.

Summary: Understanding stroke survivors' responses to attainable and unattainable goals is crucial for rehabilitation staff to support ongoing recovery and adaption effectively. In this study, stroke survivors reported that achieving personal goals helped them resume important activities, reclaim a sense of self, and enhance emotional wellbeing, while setbacks in goal pursuit facilitated acceptance of limitations. The Goal setting and Action Planning (G-AP) framework supported stroke survivors in identifying, pursuing, evaluating, and making informed decisions about their goals.

Stefanie Schnabel et al.

Summary: The study explored the experiences of stroke survivors and their carers of augmented arm rehabilitation including supported self-management. Findings indicate that most stroke survivors coped well with the intensity of the augmented arm rehabilitation program and incorporated activities into their daily routines, but some may require higher levels of support.

Examining the Application of Retroductive Theorizing in Realist-Informed Studies

Ferdinand C. Mukumbang et al.

Summary: Transcendental realism, a philosophical perspective dealing with causal powers governed by universal laws of nature, provides a useful framework for social science research, but has been criticized for offering weak methodological guidance. This study found that retroductive theorizing, a central activity in realist-informed research, is minimally and inadequately applied and described in studies. Abduction and retroduction, key to realist-informed research, are seldom explicitly applied and described in such studies, highlighting methodological inadequacies.
