The clinical value of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), systemic immune-inflammation index (SII), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and systemic inflammation response index (SIRI) for predicting the occurrence and severity of pneumonia in patients with intracerebral hemorrhage

Rui-Hong Wang et al.

Summary: The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), systemic immune-inflammation index (SII), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and systemic inflammation response index (SIRI) were compared for their predictive value for stroke-associated pneumonia (SAP) in patients with intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). The NLR was found to be the best predictor for SAP occurrence and ICU admission, as well as for the outcome at discharge in ICH patients.

Factors Associated with the Development of Coagulopathy after Open Traumatic Brain Injury

Yuhui Chen et al.

Summary: The incidence of coagulopathy after open traumatic brain injury (TBI) is high. Patients with a low GCS score, high NLR, low PLR, and hyperglycemia at admission are at greater risk of coagulopathy and poor prognosis. The efficacy of TXA in open TBI patients with coagulopathy is unclear. PLR may be a novel indicator for predicting coagulopathy.

Cerebral Hemorrhage: Pathophysiology, Treatment, and Future Directions

Jessica Magid-Bernstein et al.

Summary: This review article provides an overview of the epidemiology, cause, mechanisms of injury, current treatment strategies, and future research directions of intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). The incidence of hemorrhagic stroke has increased globally in the past 40 years, with changes in the cause over time due to improved hypertension management and increased use of anticoagulants. Preclinical and clinical trials have shed light on the underlying cause and mechanisms of injury from ICH, including the complex interaction between edema, inflammation, iron-induced injury, and oxidative stress. Although several trials have investigated the optimal medical and surgical management of ICH, there has been no clear improvement in survival and functional outcomes. Ongoing research into novel approaches for ICH management offers hope for reducing the devastating impact of this disease in the future.

The clinical value of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio, and D-dimer-to-fibrinogen ratio for predicting pneumonia and poor outcomes in patients with acute intracerebral hemorrhage

Sai Luo et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and D-dimer-to-fibrinogen ratio (DFR) as predictors of pneumonia and poor outcomes in patients with acute intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). The results showed that NLR and PLR were independent predictors of pneumonia, while NLR and DFR were independent predictors of poor 90-day outcomes.

The predictive value of neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio on 30-day outcomes in spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage patients after surgical treatment: A retrospective analysis of 128 patients

Yiqin Zhao et al.

Summary: This study explored the predictive value of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) on 30-day outcomes in patients with spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) after surgical treatment. The results showed that NLR within 48 hours after surgery was an independent risk factor for the 30-day outcomes in patients with ICH. The peak NLR >12.35 or 14.46 in patients receiving different surgical approaches reflected a poor prognosis.

Summary: This study found that a significantly increased NLR may have an impact on the poor outcomes and functional disability of patients with spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH), while a slightly elevated NLR may play a protective role.

Platelet Dysfunction after Traumatic Brain Injury: A Review

Christina M. Riojas et al.

Summary: Coagulopathy is a known complication of traumatic brain injury (TBI) that can increase morbidity and mortality. Platelet dysfunction is a common occurrence following moderate-severe TBI, and platelet function assays along with platelet transfusion may improve clinical outcomes. However, variability in the literature and retrospective nature of the data present challenges in developing evidence-based management guidelines.

Neutrophil-to-Lymphocyte, Platelet-to-Lymphocyte and Monocyte-to-Lymphocyte Ratio in Bipolar Disorder

Laura Fusar-Poli et al.

Summary: This study found that inflammatory markers in blood, particularly PLR, were significantly higher in (hypo)manic patients compared to depressed patients. PLR may serve as an independent predictor of (hypo)mania, suggesting that inflammatory markers could explain the onset and recurrence of mood episodes in BD patients. Further research is needed to clarify the role of inflammatory ratios as peripheral biomarkers of BD mood episodes.

Summary: In the field of inflammatory biomarkers associated with vascular disorders, the neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) appears to be the most widely studied and accepted biomarker in stroke patients. While it has been shown to be a prognostic risk factor in ischemic stroke, intracerebral hemorrhage, and cerebral venous thrombosis, its diagnostic role is still being investigated.
