A Case of Myotonic Dystrophy Type I With Rimmed Vacuoles in Skeletal Muscle Pathology

Rui Ban et al.

Summary: DM1 and DM2 are the most common muscular dystrophies, primarily affecting skeletal muscle. In addition to muscles, the diseases also involve the eyes, heart, brain, endocrine glands, gastrointestinal tract, skin, skeleton, and peripheral nerves. Skeletal muscle pathology is mainly characterized by myopathic changes, including internal nuclei and sarcoplasmic masses.

Out-of-Frame Mutations in ACTN2 Last Exon Cause a Dominant Distal Myopathy With Facial Weakness

Marco Savarese et al.

Summary: This study characterized patients with a rare form of actininopathy presenting with a unique combination of distal myopathy and facial weakness. High-throughput sequencing identified novel mutations in the ACTN2 gene in each proband, providing insight into the molecular diagnosis of this disease.

Thigh and Leg Muscle MRI Findings in GNE Myopathy

Farzad Fatehi et al.

Summary: This study identified three clusters of muscle involvement and three groups of patients among GNE patients. The hamstring muscles and the anterior compartment of the lower leg were found to have the highest fat infiltration. Additionally, a weak genotype-muscle MRI association was observed with tibialis posterior being more involved in patients with the most frequent mutation.

A novel homozygous exon2 deletion of TRIM32 gene in a Chinese patient with sarcotubular myopathy: A case report and literature review

Xiao-Jing Wei et al.

Summary: A 50-year-old Chinese man with sarcotubular myopathy caused by a TRIM32 gene mutation exhibited weakness in the muscles of the lower limbs and elevated creatine kinase levels. Histopathological examination showed dystrophic changes, and whole-exome sequencing identified a novel mutation in the TRIM32 gene.

Skeletal Muscle Magnetic Resonance Biomarkers in GNE Myopathy

Chia-Ying Liu et al.

Summary: This study characterized muscle involvement and disease severity in patients with GNE myopathy using skeletal muscle MRI and proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The findings showed that muscle volume correlated with strength, function, and patient-reported outcomes, indicating the potential of MRI biomarkers to monitor disease progression noninvasively.

Summary: This study identified OPDM_LRP12 as the most common OPDM subtype in Japan, characterized by oculopharyngeal weakness, distal myopathy affecting the soleus and gastrocnemius muscles, and rimmed vacuoles in muscle biopsy samples.
