Summary: Knockout (KO) mouse models are important for understanding biological processes associated with diseases. This study found that Mertk KO mice exhibit severe early-onset retinal degeneration due to the failure of MERTK-mediated phagocytosis. However, the loss of Mertk alone is not sufficient for retinal degeneration, as the loss of its paralog Tyro3 is also necessary. Additionally, Mertk KO mice show improved anti-tumor immunity, likely because of the failure of macrophages to dispose of cancer cell corpses.
