The role of complement in the tick cellular immune defense against the entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium robertsii

Jessica Fiorotti et al.

Summary: The study showed that ticks are capable of defending themselves against fungal infections to a certain extent, but tick mortality increases significantly when their hemocytes' ability to phagocytose fungal conidia is impaired. The research also highlighted the pivotal roles of C3-like complement components and alpha 2-macroglobulin pan-protease inhibitors in the phagocytosis of Metarhizium robertsii.

Rickettsia parkeri infection modulates the sialome and ovariome of the Gulf coast tick, Amblyomma maculatum

Melina Garcia Guizzo et al.

Summary: The Gulf Coast tick is an important tick vector that can transmit several tick-borne pathogens, including Rickettsia parkeri. This study found that the persistence of R. parkeri within the tick population is facilitated by the tick tissues' oxidant/antioxidant balance and the non-pathogenic tick microbiome. The interaction between the tick and the pathogen leads to transcriptional alterations in both the tick and the pathogen, allowing for pathogen transmission and persistence within the tick population.

A patatin-like phospholipase mediates Rickettsia parkeri escape from host membranes

Summary: This study identified a phospholipase enzyme in Rickettsia bacteria that plays an important role in the invasion and spread of infection by helping the bacteria escape from host cell vacuoles, preventing targeting by autophagy, and promoting bacterial motility and spread to other cells.

Distinct Roles of Hemocytes at Different Stages of Infection by Dengue and Zika Viruses in Aedes aegypti Mosquitoes

Thiago H. J. F. Leite et al.

Summary: Hemocytes play a dual role in controlling viral infections in Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, with phagocytosis not required in the midgut but essential to restrict systemic dissemination of dengue and Zika viruses. Understanding this mechanism could help in designing strategies to prevent the transmission of arboviruses.

Cell Line Platforms Support Research into Arthropod Immunity

Cynthia L. Goodman et al.

Summary: Cell lines are valuable tools for studying insect and tick immunity, allowing researchers to investigate how these organisms recognize and respond to infections, as well as develop strategies for future research. In particular, immortal arthropod cell lines provide a cost-effective and consistent platform for understanding and controlling important insects and ticks.

Recent insights into hematopoiesis in crustaceans

Man-Jun Liu et al.

Summary: Hematopoiesis in crustaceans involves the continuous formation of HSCs and diverse blood cells, essential for cellular and humoral immunity. The regulation of hematopoiesis involves changes in expression of factors, while some factors play a role in maintaining cellular homeostasis. This review provides insight into the molecular regulation of crustacean hematopoiesis, contributing to a comprehensive understanding of the process.

Summary: Researchers successfully depleted phagocytic immune cells in fruit flies and yellow fever mosquitoes using clodronate liposomes (CLD), validating the critical role of phagocytes in combating bacterial pathogens. This study demonstrates the broad utility of CLD in insect systems, advancing research on phagocyte function in insect innate immunity.
