Arctic tropospheric ozone: assessment of current knowledge and modelperformance

Cynthia H. Whaley et al.

Summary: This study summarizes recent research on the observations and modeling of tropospheric ozone in the Arctic, revealing significant differences in the seasonal cycles of surface ozone at different locations. The 12 state-of-the-art models used in this study lack the necessary surface halogen chemistry to accurately simulate coastal Arctic surface ozone depletion. The multi-model median underestimates Arctic surface ozone by 5% to 15% depending on the location, and there is a wide variability among the models.

Little Influence of Asian Anthropogenic Aerosols on Summer Temperature in Central East Asia Since 1960

Wenjian Hua et al.

Summary: Recent summer SAT variations in Central East Asia have been influenced by greenhouse gas and aerosol forcing, with the majority of the effects coming from aerosols outside Asia. Unlike Europe, where direct and indirect aerosol effects drive the long-term trends and variations, in Central East Asia, atmospheric circulation response to aerosols from outside Asia plays an important role.

Global patterns of daily CO2 emissions reductions in the first year of COVID-19

Zhu Liu et al.

Summary: Observing daily changes in CO2 emissions, the study reveals the sectors and countries where the pandemic-related emissions declines were most pronounced in 2020. The reductions in emissions were mainly driven by the decrease in global economic activity, particularly in the transportation sector, during the lockdowns. However, as economic activity partially reopened, CO2 emissions gradually recovered towards pre-pandemic levels.

The ozone-climate penalty over South America and Africa by 2100

Flossie Brown et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the change in surface ozone (O-3) concentrations due to climate change over South America and Africa. The results show that while models predict a decrease in surface O-3 due to climate change on average, an ozone-climate penalty may occur in areas with high O-3 concentrations, such as urban and biomass burning areas.

The results showed significant biases in important aerosol processes, such as emissions, removal, and optical properties, in current global models. Further research is needed to address these biases.

Enhanced secondary pollution offset reduction of primary emissions during COVID-19 lockdown in China

Xin Huang et al.

Summary: The study indicates that during the COVID lockdown, haze was mainly driven by enhanced secondary pollution, particularly due to the significant decrease in NOx emissions from transportation. This highlights the need for a coordinated and balanced strategy to control multiple pollutants for haze mitigation.

Climate Impacts of COVID-19 Induced Emission Changes

A. Gettelman et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic led to reductions in aerosol and precursor emissions, affecting aerosol-cloud interactions and temperatures. The average overall Effective Radiative Forcing (ERF) peaks at +0.29 Wm(-2) in spring 2020, with a small impact on global surface temperature. The aerosol changes have the largest contribution to radiative forcing and temperature changes due to COVID-19 affected emissions.

Assessing the Influence of COVID-19 on the Shortwave Radiative Fluxes Over the East Asian Marginal Seas

Yi Ming et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic led to significant reductions in aerosol emissions and reflected sunlight over the East Asian Marginal Seas in March 2020. About one-third of the observed anomalies can be attributed to pandemic-related emission reductions, while the rest are influenced by weather variability and long-term emission trends. The current observational and modeling capabilities are crucial for monitoring, understanding, and predicting the radiative forcing and climate impacts of the ongoing crisis.

The Climate Response to Emissions Reductions Due to COVID-19: Initial Results From CovidMIP

Chris D. Jones et al.

Summary: The models show reduced aerosol amounts in 2020, particularly over southern and eastern Asia, leading to increased surface shortwave radiation levels. However, the impact on near-surface temperature or rainfall during 2020-2024 is extremely small and not detectable in this initial analysis. Further regional analyses and closer attention to extremes are needed to evaluate the impact of COVID-19-related emission reductions on near-term climate.

Ozone pollution in the North China Plain spreading into the late-winter haze season

Ke Li et al.

Summary: Surface ozone is a severe air pollution problem in the North China Plain, with highest concentrations in summer driven by fast photochemical production of hydrogen oxide radicals. However, a switch to fast ozone production during winter haze episodes was seen following the COVID-19 lockdown in January 2020, due to a decrease in NOx emissions. Efforts to target NOx emissions have led to an increasing association of high ozone with winter haze events, while VOC emissions have remained constant. Decreasing VOC emissions would prevent the further spread of severe ozone pollution events in the winter-spring season.

Global Changes in Secondary Atmospheric Pollutants During the 2020 COVID-19 Pandemic

Benjamin Gaubert et al.

Summary: During the COVID-19 pandemic, global reductions in primary pollutants (NOx, VOCs, CO, SO2) led to increases in secondary pollutants in NOx-saturated areas and decreases in NOx-limited areas. The response of the chemical system depended on changes in NOx and VOC emissions, and was influenced by weather variability, which could lead to anomalies in chemical species concentrations.

Ozone Continues to Increase in East Asia Despite Decreasing NO2: Causes and Abatements

Hyo-Jung Lee et al.

Summary: Satellite measurements show consistent increase in ozone levels across the Asia-Pacific region, with most regions transitioning to NOx-limited ozone chemistry while some major cities still experience NOx-saturated conditions. Short-term VOC and NOx controls are needed to reduce ozone levels. IPCC predicts that NOx saturation will continue until 2025, with a gradual shift to NOx-limited regimes by 2050. Continued reductions in NOx emissions will be crucial for long-term ozone reduction.
