Atopic dermatitis: an expanding therapeutic pipeline for a complex disease

Thomas Bieber

Summary: Recent advances in understanding of the complex phenotype and mechanisms underlying atopic dermatitis (AD) have revealed multiple new potential targets for pharmacological intervention. There are now more than 70 new compounds in development, in addition to regulatory approval for several inhibitors in Europe. The potential for a precision medicine approach to enable prevention and more effective long-term control of this complex disease is highlighted.

Advances in the colon-targeted chitosan based multiunit drug delivery systems for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease

Nilesh Kulkarni et al.

Summary: Chitosan, a cationic polymer with biodegradability, is a suitable choice for colon-targeted drug delivery in inflammatory bowel disease. Its ability to attach strongly to mucosa and interact with anionic polymers enables safe and efficient delivery to the colon. Compared to commercial grade gastro-resistant polymers, chitosan is considered safer for long-term therapy in chronic diseases.

Atopic dermatitis in the pediatric population A cross-sectional, international epidemiologic study

Jonathan Silverberg et al.

Summary: This global survey in 18 countries revealed that atopic dermatitis affects a substantial proportion of the pediatric population, with less than 15% having severe cases. Prevalence and severity varied across countries and age groups, with rural areas generally having lower prevalence than urban or suburban areas.

Gallic Acid Ameliorates Atopic Dermatitis-Like Skin Inflammation Through Immune Regulation in a Mouse Model

Guohong Hu et al.

Summary: GA was found to significantly improve the thickness and pathology of the ear in DNCB-induced mice. Serum IgE and TNF-alpha levels were decreased in GA-treated model mice compared to the model group. GA treatment also reduced the weight of lymph nodes and the expression levels of inflammatory cytokines in both ears and lymph nodes.

Atopic Dermatitis: Epidemiology and Clinical Phenotypes

Annunziata Raimondo et al.

Summary: Atopic dermatitis is a chronic, lifelong, relapsing condition with diverse clinical presentations, and a clear definition of different clinical phenotypes and epidemiology is essential for appropriate treatment and management. Recent epidemiologic data on AD prevalence and incidence rates, particularly in Europe, play a crucial role in understanding the disease and trends in different populations.

Skin dysbiosis in the microbiome in atopic dermatitis is site-specific and involves bacteria, fungus and virus

Rie Dybboe Bjerre et al.

Summary: This study highlights significant differences in microbial composition between patients with atopic dermatitis (AD) and healthy controls at different skin sites, with the most pronounced differences observed on the flexures and neck. The neck of AD patients lacks certain microbial species, and viruses mainly consist of Propionibacterium and Staphylococcus phages.
