Printed graphene oxide-based membranes for gas separation and carbon capture

Fanglei Zhou et al.

Summary: In this study, a fast and scalable method using co-solvent ink-jet printing was successfully employed to prepare large-area, ultrathin, high-quality GO membranes for gas separation applications. The printed GO membrane demonstrated selective transport for hydrogen and helium over carbon dioxide and nitrogen, showing great potential for large-scale production of GO-based gas separation membranes and versatile use of other 2-dimensional materials for membrane applications.

Shear-induced assembly of high-aspect-ratio graphene nanoribbon nanosheets in a confined microchannel: Membrane fabrication for ultrafast organic solvent nanofiltration

Ji Hoon Kim et al.

Summary: One-dimensional graphene oxide nanoribbons (GONRs) were self-assembled into two-dimensional nanosheets using shear and confinement effects. The thickness and lateral dimension of the nanosheets could be controlled, and they could be continuously coated on a porous polymer support. The GONR membrane showed ultrafast organic solvent nano-filtration and efficient diafiltration of mixed organic molecules.

Ultrathin graphene oxide membrane for pilot scale dyehouse effluent treatment

Zhiyu Liu et al.

Summary: Research on graphene oxide (GO) based membranes has rapidly developed in the past decade due to their ultrafast water transport and excellent molecule sieving properties. However, there have been no reported pilot-scale on-site wastewater treatment experiments using GO-based membranes. This study conducted a pilot trial using ultrathin GO membranes to treat a dyehouse effluent, demonstrating excellent purification efficiency and stability. The findings suggest that GO membranes are highly feasible for large-scale treatment of industrial effluent.

Fabrication Techniques for Graphene Oxide-Based Molecular Separation Membranes: Towards Industrial Application

Ohchan Kwon et al.

Summary: The review discusses eight physical methods for the fabrication of GO membranes, categorizing them based on batch-unit or continuous production into five small-scale (vacuum filtration, pressure-assisted filtration, spin coating, dip coating, drop-casting) and three large-scale (spray coating, bar/doctor blade coating, slot die coating) approaches. Large-scale methods offer the advantage of continuous production which is not limited by equipment dimensions but rather material availability, while small-scale methods are restricted by the size of the fabrication device.

A Facile and Scalable Method of Fabrication of Large-Area Ultrathin Graphene Oxide Nanofiltration Membrane

Zhiyu Liu et al.

Summary: The scalable ultrathin uniform GO membrane fabrication technique reported in this study utilizes Mayer rod-coating and short-time, high-power UV reduction to produce large area, thin GO membranes. The interlayer spacing of the membrane can be effectively reduced and regulated to improve salt rejection rate, while the fabricated membrane shows superior water permeability and high separation efficiency, along with excellent mechanical stability under harsh conditions. The developed fabrication method can be scaled up using a roll-to-roll industrial production process, solving the current bottleneck in GO membrane research and enabling industrial usage of GO membrane.
