Investigation on dry sliding wear behavior of AA5083/nano-Al2O3 metal matrix composites

R. Suresh et al.

Summary: The tribological behavior of aluminum alloy/nano-Al2O3 metal matrix composites was studied, and it was found that the composites reinforced with nano-particles exhibited better wear resistance. Wear increased with an increase in load and sliding distance, while it decreased with an increase in reinforcement percentage.

Wear behavior of metal matrix nanocomposites

Ahmad Ghahremani et al.

Summary: This paper provides an overview of the surface properties and wear behavior of metal matrix nanocomposites (MMNCs), focusing on manufacturing routes, nanoparticles, and dominant wear mechanisms. It is found that ceramic-reinforced composites generally show better wear resistance compared to carbon-based nanomaterials. Hybrid MMNCs, especially those combining ceramic and carbon-based particles, are promising materials for improving surface resistance.

Study on mechanical characteristics of the nano-TiC reinforced Al6061 metal matrix composites

Santhi M. George et al.

Summary: The purpose of this study is to determine the wear mechanism of Al6061 metal matrix composites (MMCs) under the influence of different proportions of titanium carbide nanoparticles (nano-TiC). The study found that increasing the weight percentage of nano-TiC reinforcement can improve the rigidity and wear resistance of the composite, but increasing sliding speeds significantly increases the wear rate. The optimum hardness and wear resistance values are found at the reinforcement of 9% nano-TiC in Al6061 MMC.

Analyzing the hardness and wear properties of SiC and hBN reinforced aluminum hybrid nanocomposites

Parthiban Krishnan et al.

Summary: Hybrid composites based on aluminum with secondary hBN particles have shown improved wear characteristics due to the self-lubricating properties of hBN. Nanocomposites reinforced with 5% SiC and 1.5% hBN exhibit the highest hardness and wear resistance properties.

Investigation on the Effect of Stirring Process Parameters on the Dispersion of SiC Particles Inside Melting Crucible

Vishal R. Mehta et al.

Summary: Stirring based liquid metal processing is a widely explored process by researchers for the production of metal matrix composites (MMCs). The dispersion of reinforcement particles is the major challenge in this process, with important parameters including stirring speed, stirrer geometry, stirrer position, and stirring time. Investigating the significance and effect of these parameters on particle dispersion revealed the optimal conditions for uniform dispersion of SiC particles.

Studies on the Influence of Stirrer Blade Design on the Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of a Novel Aluminum Metal Matrix Composite

Pradeep Kumar Krishnan et al.

Summary: By conducting experiments and using the CFD method, the present study thoroughly examined the influence of stirrer blade design on the dispersion of reinforcement particles in aluminum metal matrix. The four-blade flat stirrer design was determined to be the most effective in achieving optimal reinforcement distribution and mechanical properties among the five different blade designs investigated.

Ultrasonically Stir Cast SiO2/A356 Metal Matrix Nanocomposites

Massoud Malaki et al.

Summary: Metal matrix nanocomposites have lightweight high-strength properties but commonly suffer from poor wetting between nanomaterials and metals, leading to issues such as agglomeration and reduced mechanical performance. Research shows that using high-intensity ultrasonic agitation can effectively improve the affinity between nano-silica particles and the host aluminum matrix, enhancing ductility.

Wettability in Metal Matrix Composites

Massoud Malaki et al.

Summary: This paper critically reviews and comprehensively discusses the common approaches used to enhance wetting conditions at reinforcement-matrix interfaces in metal matrix composites. Special attention is given to the enhancement of mechanical properties in aluminum matrix composites for lightweight materials. It is believed that effective treatment methods can greatly influence wetting and interfacial strength.
