Unveiling the role of the lone electron pair in sesquioxides at high pressure: compressibility of β-Sb2O3

Summary: The compressed beta-Sb2O3 polymorph, known as valentinite, exhibits unique compressibility with critical pressure ranges at 2, 4, and 10 GPa, mainly influenced by the interaction of stereochemically-active lone electron pairs of Sb atoms and softening of Raman- and IR-active modes. A first-order transition occurs above 15 GPa, indicating structural instability, with a tentative new high-pressure phase (s.g. Pcc2) assigned above this pressure.

High-pressure and low-temperature structural study of claudetite I, a monoclinic layered As2O3 polymorph

Summary: High-pressure structural studies of arsenic(III) oxide polymorphs reveal that claudetite I is the densest and least compressible ambient-pressure As2O3 polymorph, with no phase transitions under high pressure or low temperature. The coordination sphere of arsenic atoms is thoroughly characterized, showing that claudetite I does not exhibit the highest coordination numbers despite being the densest polymorph. The pressure dependence of As-O bond lengths and stereoactivity of arsenic lone electron pairs are also investigated, demonstrating consistent behaviors across different As2O3 polymorphs.
