Removal of tetracycline from wastewater using g-C3N4 based photocatalysts: A review

Akash Balakrishnan et al.

Summary: Tetracycline is one of the most widely used antibiotics in human therapy, veterinary applications, and agricultural activities. Its consumption is expected to increase by over 30% by 2030. This review focuses on the recent advancements in photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline using graphitic carbon nitride-based photocatalysts, which offer higher visible light activity, low cost, and non-toxicity. The properties, worldwide consumption, occurrence, and environmental impacts of tetracycline are comprehensively discussed. The occurrence of tetracycline in various water matrices has been confirmed, with a maximum concentration of 54 μg/L. Among different graphitic carbon nitride-based materials, heterojunctions have shown the highest photocatalytic degradation efficiency of 100% with reusability for up to 5 cycles. Photocatalytic membranes are found to be feasible due to ease of recovery and better reusability. The limitations and efficient solutions for graphitic carbon nitride-based wastewater treatment technology are also emphasized in detail.

Photocatalytic transformation of Rhodamine B to Rhodamine-110-The mechanism revisited

Anna Jakiminska et al.

Summary: Understanding the TiO2-assisted phototransformations observed for Rhodamine B derivatives is important for comprehensive knowledge of this dye's behavior. The photocatalytic transformations of Rhodamine B involve N-deethylation, forming Rhodamine-110 instead of chromophore degradation. This research studied the N-deethylation process in solution and solid state, and found that the choice of light wavelength is crucial for controlling the degradation pathway. The process does not require reactive oxygen species, but involves photoinduced electron transfer and radical transformations of the dye.

Summary: Nanocomposites of nitrogen-doped TiO2 and reduced graphene oxide were synthesized using a cost-effective microwave-assisted method. The loading of reduced graphene oxide positively affected the photocatalytic activity, especially at lower loading levels. The degradation of organic micropollutants was achieved through a combination of adsorption and photocatalysis, with the specific pollutant type determining the photocatalytic mechanism. Irradiation spectra were found to be more relevant than intensity in the photocatalytic process.
