State-of-the-art passivation strategies of c-Si for photovoltaic applications: A review

Sakti Prasanna Muduli et al.

Summary: Carrier recombination at the surface and bulk is a major obstacle in improving the power conversion efficiency of first-generation solar cells. Passivation techniques, which neutralize dangling bonds or create a field effect, are employed to minimize recombination. This review discusses the evolution of cell structures based on passivation and categorizes passivation schemes based on their mechanism. There are two approaches to passivating crystalline Si: reducing minority carrier concentration at the surface or decreasing intermediate density of states. The paper compares dielectric layers for contact passivation in terms of substrate compatibility, effectiveness, interface qualities, and carrier-selective emitters, and also explores advanced hydrogen passivation techniques for bulk defects.

Experimental Investigation of Influence of Electrolytic Solution in Porous Silicon Formation for Solar Energy Conversion

D. Lingaraja et al.

Summary: The goal of this research is to develop a low-cost method to improve the efficiency of solar cells. A low-cost, high resistive p-type silicon wafer is used to fabricate porous silicon, and the electrochemical etching parameters are modified to reduce the wafer's reflectivity. The addition of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) as a catalyst with the electrolytic solution leads to increased pore size and band gap, resulting in high anti-reflectance properties. The reflectance spectrum analysis shows an average reflectance of 2.1%, indicating that porous silicon synthesized with H2O2 catalyst can be used as a solar cell.

High efficiency TOPCon solar cells with micron/nano-structured emitter for a balance of light-trapping and surface passivation

Jiahui Xu et al.

Summary: In this study, a reactive ion etching technique is used to fabricate nanopores on top of pre-formed micron-pyramid silicon surface, called NPP structure, to improve the photoelectric conversion efficiency of TOPCon solar cells. However, the NPP structure also leads to serious Auger recombination and surface recombination, which affect the emitter passivation of the cells. By investigating the impact of different radio-frequency power on the cell's optical and electrical properties, an appropriate balance between light-trapping and surface passivation is identified.

A Two-Channel Silicon Nitride Multimode Interference Coupler with Low Back Reflection

Jonathan Menahem et al.

Summary: The article discusses the back reflection issue in optical communication systems based on silicon multimode interference technology and proposes a two-channel demultiplexer for the C-band spectrum. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed device has low power loss, wide bandwidth, and good crosstalk performance. Unlike traditional angled MMI designs, this device utilizes silicon nitride material to achieve lower back-reflection losses without the need for special tilted structures.
