Development of artificial geopolymer aggregates with thermal energy storage capacity

Yi Fang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the integration of phase change materials (PCMs) into building materials for improved energy efficiency. The use of artificial geopolymer aggregate (GPA) as a novel PCM carrier is explored, with a focus on the physical, mechanical, and thermal properties of GPA-PCM. The study demonstrates that increasing the incineration bottom ash (IBA) content enhances the porosity of GPA, allowing for greater PCM absorption and resulting in significant thermal regulation.

Effect of Elevated Temperature on the Microstructure of Metakaolin-Based Geopolymer

Stephen Adjei et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of elevated temperatures on the microstructure of geopolymer systems. The results show that sudden exposure to higher temperatures can lead to the formation of new crystalline phases, which may cause thermal stress, system weakening, and ultimately affect the geopolymer's ability to isolate the formation and support the casing.

Bone ash reinforced geopolymer composites

Abdul W. Bhuiya et al.

Summary: Potassium-based geopolymer composites were fabricated using different materials and improvements were made to their mechanical properties and high-temperature resistance by adding various particles. Results showed that the addition of bone ash or DCP significantly enhanced the strength of the composites, with DCP exhibiting a self-healing effect and reducing water absorption rate.

Amorphous self-healed, chopped basalt fiber-reinforced, geopolymer composites

Patrick F. Keane et al.

Summary: Geopolymer composites containing basalt fibers and low-melting glass were systematically heat-treated at high temperatures, showing improved flexure strength due to the amorphous self-healing effect of the glass frit. The composite transformed into an amorphous self-healed geopolymer (ASH-G) at temperatures up to 900 degrees C and into an amorphous self-healed ceramic (ASH-C) at around 1000 degrees C.

Review and characterisation of high-temperature phase change material candidates between 500 C and 700 degrees C

Ming Liu et al.

Summary: Latent heat thermal energy storage using phase change materials is a promising technology for integrating into concentrated solar power applications. While connecting multiple PCMs in series has potential to improve thermal performance, this technology has not been deployed commercially due to lack of reliable thermophysical property data for high temperature PCMs.

Chemical degradation in Thermally Cycled Stainless Steel 316 with High-Temperature Phase Change Material

Yanting Yin et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the performance of stainless steel 316 as a containment material for phase change material (PCM) cycled at high temperatures using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction methods. Increasing exposure time to PCM was found to lead to increased oxidation and depletion, resulting in embrittlement of the sigma-phase structure in the corrosion layer.

Ultra-high heating rate effects on the sintering of ceramic nanoparticles: an in situ TEM study

Xin Li Phuah et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the use of in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) heating to observe ceramic nanoparticles in real-time under ultra-high heating rates up to 1200 degrees C/s. It was found that ultra-high heating rate is highly effective in densifying 3 mol.% yttria-stabilized zirconia nanoparticles, while less effective for 8 mol.% yttria-stabilized zirconia or zinc oxide due to competing diffusion mechanisms.
