Photocatalytic sol-gel/P25 TiO2 coatings for water treatment: Degradation of 7 selected pharmaceuticals

Lev Matoh et al.

Summary: This study explored the effect of different water matrices on the photocatalytic degradation of dissolved pharmaceuticals. The degradation efficiencies in wastewater effluent and water effluent were compared with deionized water. The results showed that even in the presence of other organic molecules, the compounds could still be removed from the water, although at a slower rate. Understanding the effects of different wastewater compositions on photocatalytic reactions can help refine the potential applications of this technology.

Preparation of reusable UHMWPE/TiO2 photocatalytic microporous membrane reactors for efficient degradation of organic pollutants in water

Guizhen Zhang et al.

Summary: A photocatalytic membrane reactor made of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene/inorganic particle was prepared using a melt-blending method. The reactor exhibited high porosity and loading capacity. It showed excellent catalytic efficiency, with the degradation rates of various organic dyes and hormone pollutants reaching over 96.6% within 60-80 minutes.

Typical Sulfonamide Antibiotics Removal by Biochar-Amended River Coarse Sand during Groundwater Recharge

Rui Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the removal of sulfonamide antibiotics in groundwater recharge areas using biochar-amended soil aquifer treatment (SAT) columns. Batch experiments demonstrated that biochars had high adsorption capacities for sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and trimethoprim (TMP). Column experiments showed that the biochar-amended SAT had a significantly higher removal rate for SMX and TMP compared to the non-amended SAT.

Development of TiO2-Based Photocatalyst Supported on Ceramic Materials for Oxidation of Organic Pollutants in Liquid Phase

Sadjo Danfa et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that impregnating TiO2 powder on ceramic material is an effective method for obtaining photocatalysts. 10%TiO2/Leca showed the best performance in photocatalysis, but with significant loss of TiO2 from the support; under UVA radiation, 3.6%TiO2/Leca and 5%TiO2/Leca showed good removal efficiency for sulfamethoxazole.

Review of occurrence of pharmaceuticals worldwide for estimating concentration ranges in aquatic environments at the end of the last decade

Rafael Hernandez-Tenorio et al.

Summary: The occurrence and concentration range of pharmaceuticals in aquatic environments, specifically in 2018 and 2019, were assessed in this study. Antibiotics, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, psychiatric drugs, stimulants, and beta-blockers were the most commonly detected therapeutic groups in water bodies. The compounds with the highest occurrence in surface water and wastewater treatment plants were sulfamethoxazole, acetaminophen, carbamazepine, diclofenac, ibuprofen, caffeine, naproxen, and ciprofloxacin.

Trimethoprim adsorption using graphene oxide-carboxymethylcellulose film coated on polyethylene terephthalate as a supporter

Kiattinatapon Juengchareonpoon et al.

Summary: In this study, graphene oxide-carboxymethylcellulose film (GOF) coated on a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) supporter showed high adsorption capability towards trimethoprim. Both batch and fixed-bed adsorption techniques demonstrated GOF-PET's effectiveness in removing trimethoprim. The results suggest that GOF-PET is a promising adsorbent for the adsorption of trimethoprim.

Graphene-Based TiO2 Nanocomposite for Photocatalytic Degradation of Dyes in Aqueous Solution under Solar-Like Radiation

Martina Kocijan et al.

Summary: This study proposes a novel method for developing TiO2/rGO nanocomposites for photocatalytic dye degradation. The results show that TiO2@rGO nanocomposites with higher rGO content exhibit improved performance in degrading RhB and MB, especially with high degradation rates after exposure to solar-like radiation.

A review of treatment techniques applied for selective removal of emerging pollutant-trimethoprim from aqueous systems

Farid Mzee Mpatani et al.

Summary: Antibiotics, particularly trimethoprim (TMP), are identified as emerging pollutants that require proper control due to their hazardous effects on aquatic environments and human health. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have shown significant efficiency in the removal of TMP from water systems, although challenges and limitations in oxidation methods still exist. Further research is needed to explore the synthesis of various adsorbents for the effective removal of TMP from aqueous systems.
