Response of fiber reinforced concrete while entering into the critical stage: An attempt to detect pre-failure indicators in terms of non-extensive statistical mechanics

Stavros K. Kourkoulis et al.

Summary: The present study aims to explore the potential of Non-Extensive Statistical Mechanics (NESM) in providing pre-failure indicators. The experimental results show that NESM can effectively describe the damage evolution of the specimens near their load-carrying capacity and provide potential pre-failure indicators.

Correlation of Acoustic Emissions with Electrical Signals in the Vicinity of Fracture in Cement Mortars Subjected to Uniaxial Compressive Loading

Andronikos Loukidis et al.

Summary: Acoustic emissions (AEs) and pressure stimulated currents (PSCs) were recorded simultaneously to investigate their behavior and detect precursory indicators of cement mortar specimens under mechanical compressive loading, focusing on the AEs and PSC signal near fracture. The results showed strong similarities between the variations of the PSC signal, AE hits occurrence rate (F-function), and AE hits energy release rate (P-function). Combining the PSC signal and AE data can provide clear pre-failure indicators.

Effect of loading rate on failure characteristics of asphalt mixtures using acoustic emission technique

Hui Wei et al.

Summary: Uniaxial compression tests were conducted on asphalt mixtures with six loading rates to investigate their failure characteristics and modes. Acoustic emission (AE) technology was used to monitor the entire failure process, and typical AE characteristic parameters were analyzed. The results showed that the failure load and compressive strength of the asphalt mixtures increased significantly with the loading rate. Correlation analysis revealed favorable correlation and regularity in the amplitude-hits and amplitude-energy for loading rates of 0.2-5 mm/min, but no regularity for a loading rate of 0.05 mm/min. The dominant frequency of the AE signals ranged from 50-350 kHz, and the failure mode could be identified based on the difference in AE parameters and dominant frequency distribution.

Experimental Study on the Spatial-Temporal Failure Characteristics of Red Sandstone with a Cemented Structural Surface under Compression

Ansen Gao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the spatial-temporal failure characteristics of discontinuities between rocks by conducting uniaxial compression tests on red sandstone specimens. The results show that adding a strong binder to rock discontinuities can enhance the shear strength and stability of rock mass. The stress curve demonstrates elastic-brittle failure characteristics of the red sandstone specimens, with no obvious plastic deformation. The acoustic emission ring counts exhibit different patterns at different stages of compression, and the types and locations of internal fractures also vary accordingly.

Summary: The acoustic activity in brittle specimens under mechanical loading was studied through two alternative approaches, introducing new functions to quantify the acoustic activity. The time evolution of these functions showed common characteristics with the F-function, indicating potential pre-failure signs.

Non-Extensive Statistical Analysis of Acoustic Emissions: The Variability of Entropic Index q during Loading of Brittle Materials Until Fracture

Andronikos Loukidis et al.

Summary: Non-extensive statistical mechanics, based on non-additive entropy, is applied to study fracture mechanisms and crack evolution in mechanically loaded brittle materials. Analysis of acoustic emission data indicates the potential use of entropic index as a pre-failure indicator for impending catastrophic fracture.

Effect of temperature on physical, mechanical and acoustic emission properties of Beishan granite, Gansu Province, China

Yun Wu et al.

Summary: The study found a temperature threshold of 300 degrees C for granite, with increasing temperature leading to a sharp decrease in peak strength, P-wave velocity, and mass loss ratio. Additionally, the growth of thermal cracks at different elevated temperatures resulted in changes to the rock failure mode.

Experimental investigations of pressure stimulated currents from stressed sandstone used as precursors to rock fracture

Dexing Li et al.

Summary: The precursor information of rock fracture can be investigated through pressure stimulated current experiments, revealing that weak currents are generated instantaneously when loading is applied on sandstone samples and correspond well to stress variations. The response of pressure stimulated currents differs in different deformation stages, serving as precursors to rock fracture. Additionally, the variations in accumulated charge and current change rate also provide insights into predicting rock failure.
