Optimization of sonohydrodistillation and microwave assisted hydrodistillation by response surface methodology for extraction of essential oils from Cinnamomum cassia barks

Hasnia Benmoussa et al.

Summary: This study optimized the extraction process of Cinnamomum cassia essential oil using sonohydrodistillation (SHD) and microwave assisted hydrodistillation (MAHD) through response surface methodology (RSM). Results showed that MAHD was more efficient than SHD and hydrodistillation in terms of kinetic time, energy consumption, and environmental impact. Gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis also confirmed that MAHD produced essential oil with higher percentage of oxygenated compounds.

Supercritical CO2 Extraction of High-Added Value Compounds from Chlorella vulgaris: Experimental Design, Modelling and Optimization

Ioulia Georgiopoulou et al.

Summary: This study aimed to recover high-added value compounds from Chlorella vulgaris through supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) with CO2. The effects of extraction temperature, pressure, and solvent flow rate on yield, antioxidant activity, and content of phenolics, chlorophyll, and carotenoids were investigated. SFE optimization led to improved antioxidant activity and yield compared to conventional ethanol extraction, despite the lower yield. The addition of a co-solvent further enhanced both the antioxidant activity and yield of the extract.
