Environmental and economic assessment of mariculture systems using a high share of renewable energy sources

Marija Korican et al.

Summary: The increased demand for fish products has led to investments and modernization in aquaculture, but it has also resulted in higher energy needs and greater environmental impact. This study examines the use of renewable energy sources in mariculture systems and evaluates their environmental and economic performance. The results show a reduction in emissions and an increase in profitability when renewable energy sources are utilized.

Spatio-Temporal Disparities of Mariculture Area Production Efficiency Considering Undesirable Output: A Case Study of China's East Coast

Jianyue Ji et al.

Summary: This study examines the production efficiency of mariculture areas, taking into consideration undesirable outputs, and analyzes the spatiotemporal disparities and the reasons for the differences observed. The findings show that the production efficiency of mariculture areas fluctuates and has an increasing trend overall, with technical progress being a significant driving factor. Intra-regional differences are identified as the main cause of the variations in production efficiency.

Summary: This study used Web of Science, CiteSpace, and VOSviewer software to analyze urban microclimate research from 1980 to 2020. It provides insights into the number of publications, research countries, research institutions, key authors, highly cited publications, hot issues, and research fronts. The study found that urban microclimate research has gone through different stages and that European and American countries were the first to focus on this field, while China had a late start but rapidly developed. The research topics focused on thermal comfort, improvement strategies, urban street canyons, and the urban heat island effect. The frontiers of urban microclimate research include the study of urban microclimate and building energy, ecosystem services, and urban parks.

Characteristics of the flow field inside and around a square fish cage considering the circular swimming pattern of a farmed fish school: Laboratory experiments and field observations

Sang-gyu Park et al.

Summary: Accurate assessment of environmental impacts is crucial for the management of marine aquaculture to achieve environmental sustainability. A pseudo-fish-school structure model was developed to simulate the circular swimming patterns of farmed fish in order to study their influence on the flow field around a fish cage. The experiments and field survey revealed that the presence of fish schools affected the flow field distribution and reduced the drag force of the fish cage. The findings can serve as benchmarks for numerical models in assessing the potential environmental impact of fish farm sites.

Review of Energy Consumption by the Fish Farming and Processing Industry in Croatia and the Potential for Zero-Emissions Aquaculture

Tena Bujas et al.

Summary: This paper examines the energy needs and environmental impact of the fish farming sector, and explores the potential of increasing the use of renewable energy sources to improve its environmental friendliness. By assessing the energy consumption and emissions of different phases, the study identifies key processes that can integrate alternative powering options for environmental improvement. Using the fish farming process in Croatia as a case study, a set of alternative powering options is proposed based on the existing energy supply and renewable energy potential.

Aquaculture wastewater treatment through microalgal. Biomass potential applications on animal feed, agriculture, and energy

Catarina Viegas et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the use of microalgae in remediating effluent from brown crab aquaculture. Various microalgae strains showed high removal efficiencies for nitrogen, phosphorus, and chemical oxygen demand. Among them, Chlorella vulgaris and Scenedesmus obliquus exhibited the best performance. Supplementation with NaNO3 improved nutrient removal by microalgae, with resulting biomass potentially suitable for aquaculture feeds. Additionally, the biomass of these microalgae strains showed promising potential as biostimulants for germination of wheat and watercress.

A 20-year retrospective review of global aquaculture

Rosamond L. Naylor et al.

Summary: The sustainability of aquaculture has been intensely debated since 2000, with major contributions coming from inland aquaculture in Asia. There have been significant advances in feed efficiency and fish nutrition, but reliance on marine ingredients remains a challenge. Molluscs and seaweed have potential for ecosystem services and global nutritional security, but their quantification, valuation, and market development are still underexploited.
