DiTingMotion: A deep-learning first-motion-polarity classifier and its application to focal mechanism inversion

Ming Zhao et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a deep-learning-based method named DiTingMotion for the automatic determination of P-wave first-motion polarity (FMP). The method achieved an accuracy of 97.8% on two datasets. When integrated with HASH, it was applied to automated focal mechanism inversion and yielded comparable results to the manual method.

Aftershock Moment Tensor Scattering

John D. Wilding et al.

Summary: Using a clustering algorithm and moment tensor similarity measure, we find that aftershocks are less similar to their mainshocks, indicating widespread coseismic stress rotations. Furthermore, the similarity between mainshocks and aftershocks logarithmically recovers to pre-mainshock levels on decadal timescales.

Relocation of the Foreshocks and Aftershocks of the 2021 Ms 6.4 Yangbi Earthquake Sequence, Yunnan, China

Ting Yang et al.

Summary: On May 21, 2021, a Ms 6.4 earthquake occurred in Yangbi, Yunnan, China, with obvious foreshock activity and abundant aftershocks. The earthquake sequence exhibits a SE-trending linear alignment with most earthquakes occurring at depths above 12 km. The mainshock is likely triggered by the largest foreshock in this boundary between high- and low-velocity anomalous zone.

Multistage Nucleation of the 2021 Yangbi MS 6.4 Earthquake, Yunnan, China and Its Foreshocks

Min Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the foreshock sequence of the 2021 Yangbi M-S 6.4 earthquake using template matching and double-differencing methods. The analysis reveals that the foreshock sequence can be divided into four episodes, with the first episode initiating on a small fault and subsequent episodes shifting to a nearby major fault. The study also identifies aseismic slip in the early stage of mainshock nucleation and suggests that stress transfer may dominate the later stage. These findings suggest that both aseismic slip and stress transfer mechanisms are possible in the nucleation process of the mainshock.

The cascading foreshock sequence of the Ms 6.4 Yangbi Earthquake in Yunnan, China

Gaohua Zhu et al.

Summary: Foreshocks can provide valuable information on the nucleation process of large earthquakes. By analyzing the foreshocks preceding the 2021 Ms 6.4 Yangbi, Yunnan, China, earthquake, this study reveals the close relationship between the spatial distribution and ruptured area of foreshocks and the nucleation process of the mainshock. The observations suggest a triggered cascade of stress transfer, where previous foreshocks load adjacent fault patches to rupture as additional foreshocks, and eventually trigger the mainshock.

Seismological Characterization of the 2021 Yangbi Foreshock-Mainshock Sequence, Yunnan, China: More than a Triggered Cascade

Yijian Zhou et al.

Summary: This study investigates the Yangbi earthquake sequence in southwest China in 2021 and its foreshock mechanism. Through the analysis of relocated aftershocks and focal mechanisms, the authors find that the mainshock and foreshocks occurred on different faults. By estimating the rupture area and calculating the evolution of Coulomb stress, they reveal the interactions between the foreshocks. The results suggest that the sequence can be explained by the cascade triggering mechanism, with evidence of aseismic slip contributing to the triggering process.
