Impact of Preoperative Patient Education on Postoperative Recovery in Abdominal Surgery: A Systematic Review

Freya Brodersen et al.

Summary: This review examined the effect of preoperative patient education on postoperative recovery in abdominal surgery and assessed different patient education strategies. The majority of the included studies reported a reduction in hospital stay, postoperative complications, and psychological stress for patients who received preoperative education. However, the variations in content, delivery, and implementation make it difficult to compare the studies, and further research is needed to provide concrete recommendations for clinical practice.

Using a Combined Lean and Person-Centred Approach to Support the Resumption of Routine Hospital Activity following the First Wave of COVID-19

Ailish Daly et al.

Summary: This study discusses the experience of a private hospital in Dublin, Ireland in redesigning service delivery to resume routine hospital activity after the first wave of COVID-19. By using Lean methodology and a rapid improvement event (RIE) approach, the hospital successfully resumed services, meeting the organizational target of a 75% bed occupancy rate and exceeding the target for surgeries by 13%. Outpatient visits recovered to exceed pre-COVID-19 levels by 10%, patient satisfaction improved from 93% to 95%, and there were no in-hospital patient COVID-19 transmissions during the study period from July to December 2020.

Lean six sigma in the healthcare sector: A systematic literature review

Rajeev Rathi et al.

Summary: Healthcare organizations still lack efficiency and productivity, especially in developing nations. Lean Six Sigma methodology has the potential to improve process capability and efficiency, but there is a limited focus on improving medical processes in research studies. Studies conducted in developing nations are few, but there is increasing attention towards these countries. However, most studies in these nations are empirical and lack conceptual or exploratory research. There is a need for guidance in creating a continuous improvement environment in healthcare to sustain the improvements achieved through Lean Six Sigma implementation.
