Rapid simulations of hyperspectral near-field images of three-dimensional heterogeneous surfaces - part II

Xinzhong Chen et al.

Summary: The modeling of near-field interaction in scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscope (s-SNOM) is rapidly advancing, but a versatile and accurate modeling framework for various complex situations is still lacking. In this work, a time-efficient numerical scheme in the quasi-electrostatic limit is proposed to capture the tip-sample interaction in the near field. The method considers an extended tip geometry, providing an advantage compared to the previously reported methods. Through investigating anisotropy, experimental parameters, and spatial resolution, the method contributes to the understanding of the contrast mechanism in s-SNOM imaging and spectroscopy and provides a valuable platform for future quantitative analysis of experimental observations.

Quantitative modeling of near-field interactions incorporating polaritonic and electrostatic effects

G. Conrad et al.

Summary: This paper presents a finite element model capable of incorporating the complex physical and spatial phenomena in scattering-scanning near-field optical microscopy (s-SNOM). The model simulates the multipolar response of the tip and studies the impact of strong coupling on signal demodulation. Additionally, it investigates the electrostatic effect of metallic tips on semiconductors. The model is computationally inexpensive and can be tailored to specific nanostructured systems and geometries of interest.

Near-Field Nanoscopic Terahertz Imaging of Single Proteins

Zhongbo Yang et al.

Summary: A graphene-mediated THz scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscope is developed for direct imaging of single proteins, demonstrating that a graphene substrate with high THz reflectivity and atomic flatness provides high THz contrast against protein molecules. The use of an optimized length platinum probe enhances the amplitude of scattered THz near-field signals, allowing the topographical and THz scattering images of individual IgG and ferritin molecules with a few nanometers in size to be obtained simultaneously. This strategy opens up new avenues for imaging single biomolecules with THz.

Low terahertz-band scanning near-field microscope with 155-nm resolution

Guangbin Dai et al.

Summary: This study introduces a scattering-type scanning near-field microscope operating in the low terahertz band for nanoscopic investigations of sample surfaces and interfaces in the microwave and millimeter wave bands. By employing a nano-tip antenna and subharmonic mixer receiver with demodulation algorithms, high-resolution amplitude and phase images were achieved while scanning an Au-Si step structure, demonstrating the potential of this new instrument for micro/nano-resolution studies in the millimeter wave band.
