Electron conditioning of technical surfaces at cryogenic and room temperature in the 0-1 keV energy range

Michal Haubner et al.

Summary: We investigated the influence of low-temperature electron conditioning on ESD and SEY. The results show that SEY conditioning depends on the primary electron energy and that ESD yield significantly decreases with temperature. Amorphous-carbon coating and laser-treated copper exhibited lower SEY and ESD yields at 15 K.

Evaluation of the nonlinear surface resistance of REBCO coated conductors for their use in the FCC-hh beam screen

P. Krkotic et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the feasibility of using high-temperature superconductors for beam screens in future circular colliders. The results show that the surface resistance of REBCO coated conductors is more affected by RF magnetic fields, but still outperforms copper. Additionally, the study demonstrates the possibility of reducing the surface resistance of the vacuum chamber by changing the magnetic field intensity and frequency.

Wake field, impedance and collective instability

E. Metral

Summary: The concept of impedance was first mentioned in a CERN internal report and yellow report in the 1960s, leading to further research in theory, simulation, and measurements in particle accelerators. Impedances and wake fields remain important fields of study, with the need for reliable models to evaluate machine performance limitations and understand interactions with other mechanisms. As machines continue to push performance limits, new instability mechanisms are being explained or discovered, highlighting the ongoing complexity of impedance and beam instabilities in particle accelerators.

Beam-induced surface modifications as a critical source of heat loads in the Large Hadron Collider

Valentine Petit et al.

Summary: The study shows that abnormal heat loads in the LHC are related to surface modifications of the beam pipes induced by the beam, leading to increased secondary electron yield and hindering efficient surface conditioning, thus intensifying the electron cloud during LHC operation. Solutions to overcome this critical limitation are proposed based on these findings.
