Plastic Waste Management Strategies and Their Environmental Aspects: A Scientometric Analysis and Comprehensive Review

Saimin Huang et al.

Summary: Plastic consumption and waste increase due to population growth. Current plastic waste management strategies, especially landfill dumping, are unsustainable and create environmental and human health problems. Research has been conducted to find safe and ecologically beneficial methods for plastic waste management. This article performs a bibliographic analysis to determine key trends and discusses various strategies and their environmental benefits. Among these strategies, road construction and tar, as well as concrete production, are found to be the most effective, while landfilling is the least desirable. Recycling has pros and cons, and pyrolysis and liquefaction have limitations due to high energy requirements. Thus, using plastic waste in construction applications is recommended.
