Mitigation of ammonia inhibition in anaerobic digestion of nitrogen-rich substrates for biogas production by ammonia stripping: A review

Dominic Yellezuome et al.

Summary: This review article provides a comprehensive overview of current progress in ammonia stripping technologies applicable to anaerobic digestion systems. The findings indicate that the performance of an ammonia stripping process largely depends on the pH, temperature, and gas flow rate, and optimization is required to attain high efficiency. Side-stream and post-treatment ammonia stripping have the potential to significantly reduce ammonia concentration and avert ammonia inhibition during biogas production.

Non-thermal effect of microwave in supercritical water: A molecular dynamics simulation study

Ying Hu et al.

Summary: In this study, molecular dynamics simulations were used to investigate the non-thermal effects of supercritical water under microwave fields using the SPC and SPC/E potential models. It was found that a field-induced threshold effect is observed where the dielectric constant noticeably increases with the increase of field intensity. The influence of non-thermal effects on hydrogen bond networks was explored, and the mechanism of microwave field-dependent hydrogen bond dynamics was discussed.

Isaac Volschan Junior et al.

Summary: The debate on adapting sewage treatment objectives to circular economy and sustainability concepts has intensified, with a focus on promoting more efficient energy and resource use in wastewater treatment. Anaerobic digestion has become a viable technology for producing renewable energy, particularly through the generation of biogas in sewage treatment units and anaerobic sludge digestion. Recent advances in technology for inducing biogas generation in anaerobic digesters, including pretreatment methods and co-digestion, are discussed in terms of mechanisms, advantages, drawbacks, and technical and economic aspects. Biological pretreatment and co-digestion are identified as more promising strategies in terms of efficiency and costs.
