The role of crustal contamination in magma evolution of Neoproterozoic metaigneous rocks from Southwest Svalbard

Karolina Goluchowska et al.

Summary: Late Neoproterozoic metavolcanic rocks along the Southwest coast of Svalbard were influenced by continental magmatism, and potential sources of crustal contamination were assessed. The study found that the metavolcanic rocks in the South experienced a higher degree of contamination, while those in the North were influenced by carbonate and shale.

Ecotoxicity of copper input and accumulation for soil biodiversity in vineyards

Battle Karimi et al.

Summary: A meta-analysis was conducted on the ecotoxicity of copper, which found that microbial activity decreased by 30% when more than 400 kg of copper was applied yearly per hectare. Nematodes abundance remained unchanged for copper application up to 3200 kg/ha/year. The reproduction of collembola and enchytraeid declined by 50% after application of 400 and 1895 kg Cu/ha/year, respectively, while earthworm biomass was reduced by 15% after application of 200 kgCu/ha/year.

Elemental composition and natural radioactivity of refractory materials

Francesco Caridi et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the elemental composition and radioactivity concentration of refractory samples in use by an oil refinery using XRF and high-resolution gamma-ray spectrometry. It highlighted the high presence of Zirconium and compared the activity concentrations of 226Ra, 232Th, and 40K with other locations. The dose rate and annual effective dose equivalent for workers were also estimated and compared with legislative limits.

Assessment of Natural Radioactivity and Radiological Risks in River Sediments from Calabria (Southern Italy)

Francesco Caridi et al.

Summary: This study conducted a comprehensive radiological assessment of river sediment samples from Calabria, southern Italy, identifying and quantifying natural radioisotopes to establish a baseline background on a radiation map. The results showed elevated levels of natural radionuclides in the area and calculated radiological hazard indices to determine the potential risk. The spatial distribution of natural radionuclides was delineated on a radiological map using Surfer 10 software, and multivariate statistical analysis was performed to identify relationships between radiological indices and radionuclide concentrations.

Radioactivity, Metals Pollution and Mineralogy Assessment of a Beach Stretch from the Ionian Coast of Calabria (Southern Italy)

Francesco Caridi et al.

Summary: This study conducted an investigation on a popular tourist beach in Calabria, Southern Italy, to assess radioactivity, heavy metals pollution, and mineralogy. Various measurement techniques were used to evaluate the pollution levels, including analysis of radionuclides and X-ray fluorescence spectrometry. The results showed certain levels of radioactivity and heavy metals pollution at the beach.
