Risk-based methodology to assess bridge condition based on visual inspection

Numa J. Bertola et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a risk-based methodology for evaluating bridge conditions based on visual inspection data. By integrating the degradation states of bridge elements with the consequences of element failure on global structural safety in risk analysis, the bridge condition can be accurately assessed. A case study demonstrates that this methodology enables more accurate evaluations of the impact of damage on global structural safety, leading to more objective decisions in asset management actions.

A hybrid method for damage detection and condition assessment of hinge joints in hollow slab bridges using physical models and vision-based measurements

Hao Hu et al.

Summary: This study proposes a hybrid method using physical models and vision-based measurements for damage detection and condition assessment of hinge joints in hollow slab bridges. An analytical model and finite element models are used to calculate the damage degree of hinge joints and classify their damage states. The feasibility of this method is demonstrated through application on a real-life bridge.

Determining Orders of Modes Sensitive to Hinge Joint Damage in Assembled Hollow Slab Bridges

Jian Zhang et al.

Summary: Hinge joint damage is a major defect affecting the safety of assembled hollow slab bridges. There are studies on vibration-based damage detection for hinge joints, with different modes showing varying sensitivities to hinge damage. The study uses a novel equivalent model to theoretically analyze the effect of damage on frequencies and curvature mode shapes, determining the orders of sensitive modes to hinge damage. The numerical analysis of a bridge verifies the accuracy of sensitivity analysis in detecting damage based on frequencies and curvature mode shapes.

Assessing the condition state of a concrete bridge combining visual inspection and nonlinear deterioration model

Abdoul S. Bah et al.

Summary: This paper proposes an effective structure management framework that combines on-site visual inspections and predictions from a nonlinear chloride transport model to improve diagnostics for preventive maintenance. Meaningful predictions are obtained by using climatic data and non-destructive tests, and the chloride profiles from the model can be validated with core-drilled samples. The methodology is applied to a typical bridge in Montreal and shows good agreement between the model predictions.

Fereshteh Faghihinejad et al.

Summary: Access to transportation infrastructure has a significant impact on the economic and social well-being of residents. This study examines the correlation between a country's cities' access to various transportation networks and its inhabitants' economic and social parameters. The results of a case study conducted in Iran show that transportation network access strongly influences economic development and population size, with road transport being more correlated with economic development and unemployment rate compared to other modes of transportation.

A damage identification method for connections of adjacent box-beam bridges using vehicle - bridge interaction analysis and model updating

Jiawang Zhan et al.

Summary: This study presents a method to locate and quantitatively evaluate hidden damage in adjacent box-beam connections of precast prestressed concrete box-beam bridges. Through numerical analysis and field measurements, the proposed method is shown to be relatively insensitive to various factors, accurately assess different damage scenarios, and demonstrate good consistency between identified damage indices and in-situ inspection results before bridge repair. The method is also effective in evaluating current damage after repair and is not sensitive to vehicle speed and passing path.

Qing-fu Li et al.

Summary: In this study, a durability evaluation model for reinforced concrete girder bridges was developed using the matter element extension theory, entropy weight method, and unascertained measure theory. The model effectively evaluated seven indicators of bridge durability and its results were validated against the actual conditions of the bridges using a confidence criterion. Comparative studies demonstrated the accuracy and applicability of the model in evaluating bridge durability.
