New chronological constraints for the lowermost stratigraphic unit of Atapuerca Gran Dolina (Burgos, N Spain)

Mathieu Duval et al.

Summary: A combined ESR and Luminescence dating study provides a robust chronostratigraphic framework for the lowermost stratigraphic unit of Atapuerca Gran Dolina, Spain. The results offer insights into the late Early Pleistocene chronology of the TD1 deposits and improve the correlation with the Geomagnetic Polarity Time Scale. Additionally, the study modifies interpretations of the cave formation and infilling dynamics.

Magnetic properties of cave sediments at Gran Dolina site in Sierra de Atapuerca (Burgos, Spain)

Serena D'Arcangelo et al.

Summary: The study presents new rock magnetic results from a cave in the Sierra de Atapuerca, analyzing the distribution and concentration changes of magnetic minerals in cave sediments to reconstruct the paleoenvironmental conditions of the archaeological site. Through rock magnetic analyses, the study aims to identify magnetic proxies for a better understanding of the environmental conditions at the time of early human migration into Europe.

Coping with arid environments: A critical threshold for human expansion in Europe at the Marine Isotope Stage 12/11 transition? The case of the Iberian Peninsula

Hugues-Alexandre Blain et al.

Summary: The findings suggest that climate has constraints on human settlement, particularly related to rainfall and environmental humidity. Hominin occupation in the Early and Middle Pleistocene was dominated by relatively humid wooded areas, but expanded towards more open arid areas later on. Based on estimated occupational niche, a maximum potential distribution for early hominins in Europe is proposed.

Early-Middle Pleistocene freshwater ecosystems in the Sierra de Atapuerca (northern Iberia) based on the Gran Dolina fish record

Angel Blanco-Lapaz et al.

Summary: This study reports on fish remains from the Gran Dolina cave in Spain, revealing a premountain river system with permanent, oxygen-rich, relatively cold flowing waters around the Sierra de Atapuerca during the Early-Middle Pleistocene. Taphonomic studies suggest that the European eagle owl was the likely predator responsible for the accumulation of fish bones. Changes in brown trout body size observed through the sequence cannot be attributed to climate change.
