Review of soft fluidic actuators: classification and materials modeling analysis

Amir Pagoli et al.

Summary: This article introduces the five categories of soft actuators and their characteristics and challenges. Recent advances in soft fluidic actuators (SFAs) are emphasized and seven influential designs are proposed. The modeling of SFAs is categorized into analytical, numerical, and model-free methods. The behaviors and mechanical properties of silicone materials used in SFAs are discussed, along with a comparison of constitutive models. Sensor technology integration is also explored.

Characterization of pneumatic muscle actuators and their implementation on an elbow exoskeleton with a novel hinge design

Antonio Dylan Do Rosario Carvalho et al.

Summary: The exoskeleton is important in physical rehabilitation, and the pneumatic muscle actuator is the best choice for this application. This study aims to fabricate and characterize a pneumatic muscle actuator for an exoskeleton that can be used on the elbow joint. By testing twelve different pneumatic muscles, it was found that the styrene-based muscle with a 12mm bladder showed the best force and deflection characteristics.

Fluid-Structure Interaction Modelling of a Soft Pneumatic Actuator

Duraikannan Maruthavanan et al.

Summary: This study proposes a fully coupled fluid-structure interaction model for simulating a soft pneumatic actuator. It is found that traditional finite element modelling cannot accurately capture the physical process of fluid flow inside the actuator. Therefore, conducting a two-way FSI analysis is crucial for accurately modeling the physical behavior of SPAs.

A SOFT ROBOTIC SLEEVE FOR COMPRESSION THERAPY OF THE LOWER LIMB

Luca Rosalia et al.

Summary: The development of a soft robotic-inspired device for lower limb compression therapy has combined the control capabilities of pneumatic devices with the wearability and low cost of compression garments. The three-layered soft robotic sleeve ensures safe skin contact, controls compression, and secures the device to the patient's limb. Testing on healthy individuals demonstrated the ability to reach clinically relevant target pressures and establish a descending pressure gradient, showing the device's robustness against variations in subject anatomy.
