Positive Feedback Mechanism to Increase the Charging Voltage of Li-O2 Batteries

Yoko Hase et al.

Summary: This study investigates the origin of overpotential in nonaqueous Li-O-2 batteries during charging, revealing a solid-solution type delithiation process and changes in the chemical diffusion coefficient of Li+ ions in Li2-xO2. The results suggest that an intrinsic positive feedback mechanism plays a crucial role in increasing the cell voltage during the first step of charging.

A volatile redox mediator boosts the long-cycle performance of lithium-oxygen batteries

Wei Yu et al.

Summary: In this study, a volatilization-dissolution strategy was used to supply redox mediators (RMs) to Li-O-2 batteries by introducing TEMPO-O-2, which mediated the formation-decomposition of lithium peroxide (Li2O2) and suppressed the shuttle effect of RMs. This approach led to an ultra-long cycle life of 400 cycles (1600 h) at 250 mA g(-1) for the Li-O-2 battery, showing potential for broad applications in various gas-involved Li metal batteries.

Synthesis of graphene mesosponge via catalytic methane decomposition on magnesium oxide

Shogo Sunahiro et al.

Summary: Graphene mesosponge (GMS) is a novel mesoporous carbon material mainly composed of single-layer graphene, synthesized using magnesium oxide (MgO) as a catalytic template for methane conversion. The activated MgO surface allows for relatively low activation energy in methane-to-graphene conversion, with the potential for easier production of single-layer graphene compared to traditional methods. The MgO-derived GMS possesses unique properties such as high surface area, developed mesopores, high oxidation resistance, softness, elasticity, and force-driven reversible liquid-gas phase transition, making it suitable for various applications including high-voltage supercapacitors and heat pumps.
