Nanoscale Control of One-Dimensional Confined States in Strongly Correlated Homojunctions

Quanzhen Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, the authors demonstrate the precise tuning of one-dimensional confined potential at a homojunction of two single-layer 1T-NbSe2 islands using an in situ manipulation technique. The potential is found to be structurally sensitive and shows a nonmonotonic function of their interspacing. The electronic properties also change from a correlated insulator to a generalized one-dimensional Wigner crystallization with increasing confinement.

Visualization of edge-modulated charge-density-wave orders in monolayer transition-metal-dichalcogenide metal

Quanzhen Zhang et al.

Summary: This study reports the successful construction of ultra-flat monolayer niobium diselenide with atomically sharp zigzag edges, and the observation of intriguing one-dimensional edge states and energy-dependent charge-density-wave modulation near the edge. It provides a comprehensive study of the tunable structural and electronic properties at the edges in monolayer niobium diselenide.

Monolayer 1T-NbSe2 as a 2D-correlated magnetic insulator

Mengke Liu et al.

Summary: Research on monolayer group V transition metal dichalcogenides in their 1T phase has shown that 1T-NbSe2 is a charge transfer insulator with electron correlation-induced magnetic properties. By creating a vertical 1T/2H NbSe2 heterostructure, exchange interactions between localized magnetic moments in the 1T phase and the metallic/superconducting phase were confirmed.

Charge Transfer Gap Tuning via Structural Distortion in Monolayer 1T-NbSe2

Zhen-Yu Liu et al.

Summary: The charge transfer state in monolayer 1T-NbSe2 displays two different sizes of star of David motifs that can be interconverted through temperature variation, while bilayer 1T-NbSe2 shows a Mott collapse by interlayer coupling. Computational analysis reveals that the structural distortions of the motifs in the charge transfer state alter the effective Coulomb energies of the central Nb orbital, allowing the charge transfer gap to be tunable with strain. This finding provides a general strategy for manipulating the charge transfer state in related systems toward the potential QSL regime.

Visualization of the strain-induced topological phase transition in a quasi-one-dimensional superconductor TaSe3

Chun Lin et al.

Summary: Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy is utilized to track the evolution of the electronic band structure of TaSe3 during a strain-driven topological phase transition. It is demonstrated that the quasi-one-dimensional superconductor TaSe3 undergoes reversible strain-induced topological phase transitions from a strong topological insulator phase to topologically trivial semimetal and band insulating phases. TaSe3 provides a promising platform for engineering topological spintronics, such as an on/off switch for a spin current resistant to impurity scattering.

Evidence for quantum spin liquid behaviour in single-layer 1T-TaSe2 from scanning tunnelling microscopy

Wei Ruan et al.

Summary: Research has shown that some quantum spin liquids may have an effective Fermi surface of fractionalized spinon excitations. The material 1T-TaSe2 is believed to have charge density modulations caused by an unstable spinon Fermi surface. Through scanning tunnelling spectroscopy, researchers have imaged density waves consistent with the predictions of spinon density modulation in single-layer 1T-TaSe2. Additionally, spectroscopic imaging of isolated single-layer 1T-TaSe2 has revealed long-wavelength super-modulations consistent with the behavior of itinerant spinons, allowing the experimental measurement of the spinon Fermi wavevector.
