Molecular detection of Mansonella mariae incriminates Simulium oyapockense as a potentially important bridge vector for Amazon-region zoonoses

Tullio Romao Ribeiro da Silva et al.

Summary: This study assessed the risk of emergent zoonotic diseases posed by the human-biting blackfly species Simulium oyapockense in the peripheral regions of a expanding urban center situated deep in the Brazilian Amazon rainforest. The results showed that residents in these periurban regions are routinely exposed to the bites of S. oyapockense blackflies that have previously fed on non-human primates.

Dipetalonema graciliformis (Freitas, 1964) from the red-handed tamarins (Saguinus midas, Linnaeus, 1758) in French Guiana

Younes Laidoudi et al.

Summary: Six Dipetalonema species have been reported in Neotropical monkeys, with Dipetalonema gracile, Dipetalonema graciliformis, and Dipetalonema caudispina being the dominant species in French Guiana primates. The filarioids isolated from tamarins in French Guiana were identified as D. graciliformis, which belongs to Glade 4 (ONC4) of Onchocercidae. Blast analysis revealed that D. graciliformis in tamarins is conspecific with the filarioid found in howler monkeys in French Guiana.

DNA barcodes enable higher taxonomic assignments in the Acari

Monica R. Young et al.

Summary: Mites are abundant in terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems, but their diversity is poorly understood. The Barcode Index Number (BIN) system helps facilitate large-scale surveys by distinguishing mite species based on variation in the DNA barcode region. The Barcode of Life Datasystem's identification engine (BOLD ID) generally delivers correct ordinal and family assignments for mites, with identification success improving with sequence length and taxon coverage.

An Overview of the Management of Mansonellosis

Thuy-Huong Ta-Tang et al.

Summary: Mansonellosis is caused by three filarial parasite species and is typically asymptomatic, but can lead to mild health issues. Disease burden estimates are lacking, and the importance of interventions for the disease remains debated.
