Performance comparison of r2SCAN and SCAN metaGGA density functionals for solid materials via an automated, high-throughput computational workflow

Ryan Kingsbury et al.

Summary: In this paper, the authors compared the predictions of r(2)SCAN and SCAN for approximately 6000 solid materials and found that r(2)SCAN predicts formation energies more accurately and larger lattice constants than SCAN. They also observed that r(2)SCAN requires modestly fewer computational resources and offers more reliable convergence compared to SCAN. Therefore, r(2)SCAN is a preferred choice for high-throughput metaGGA calculations.

Accounting for Dispersion Effects in the DFT Framework of Electrocatalysis: A Hybrid Solvation Model-Based Case Study of the Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Akhil S. Nair et al.

Summary: Density functional theory (DFT) is a key tool in computational electrocatalysis. In this study, different dispersion-corrected DFT methods are compared in determining catalytic properties through a case study of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The importance of considering dispersion effects for accurate prediction of catalytic activity is demonstrated by incorporating an upgraded solvation model.

Electronic structure and optical properties in alkaline-earth metals (A = Mg, Ca, Ba) and Ir co-doped SrTiO3: A DFT + U investigation

Y. Q. Wang et al.

Summary: The study investigates the synergistic effects of alkaline-earth metals A (A = Mg, Ca, Ba) and Ir co-doping on the electronic structure and optical absorption properties of SrTiO3 using the GGA + Up+Ud method. It is found that the Mg/Ir and Ca/Ir co-doped SrTiO3 exhibit n-type semiconductor characteristics, while Ba/Ir co-doped SrTiO3 remains a p-type semiconductor. The results suggest that Ba/Ir co-doping could be a new way to enhance the photocatalytic activity of SrTiO3.

Pressure induced electronic, optical and thermoelectric properties of cubic SrZrO3: DFT investigation

Muhammad Yaseen et al.

Summary: The FP-LAPW method was used to determine the electronic, optical, and thermoelectric characteristics of SrZrO3. It was found that a direct band gap appeared at 30 GPa, with the highest absorption peaks originating from the optical transition of O-2p states to Zr-4d orbitals. The thermoelectric properties improved with increasing temperature and pressure, reaching a maximum ZT value of 0.73.

Reaction pathways in the solid state and the Hubbard U correction

Joshua J. Brown et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the Hubbard U correction can significantly affect the migration barrier energies in transition metal oxide semiconductors, depending on the occupation of the transition metal d orbitals. This correction led to sudden increases in barrier energies in both SrTiO3 and ZnO, presenting important limitations for modeling reactive pathways in solid state materials using GGA DFT.
