Fabrication and nanophotonic waveguide integration of silicon carbide colour centres with preserved spin-optical coherence

Charles Babin et al.

Summary: Optically addressable spin defects in silicon carbide (SiC) are a promising platform for quantum information processing, enabling high-fidelity spin qubit operations. However, degradation of spin-optical coherence after integration in nanophotonic structures poses a challenge for scalability towards large-scale quantum networks.

Five-second coherence of a single spin with single-shot readout in silicon carbide

Christopher P. Anderson et al.

Summary: In this study, single-shot readout of single defects in silicon carbide (SiC) is achieved through spin-to-charge conversion, enabling mapping of the defect's spin state onto a long-lived charge state. The technique demonstrates over 80% readout fidelity and allows for measurement of long spin coherence times. Integration with semiconductor devices opens up opportunities for electrical readout.

Generalized scaling of spin qubit coherence in over 12,000 host materials

Shun Kanai et al.

Summary: In this study, an algebraic expression for the quantum coherence time (T-2) of spin defect centers in host compounds is uncovered based on cluster correlation expansion (CCE) technique. By investigating over 12,000 host compounds, silicon carbide (SiC) is found to possess the longest coherence times among widegap nonchalcogenides, while more than 700 chalcogenides possess longer T-2 than SiC. Potential host compounds with promisingly long T-2 up to 47 ms are suggested, paving the way for exploring unprecedented functional materials for quantum applications.

Thermometric quantum sensor using excited state of silicon vacancy centers in 4H-SiC devices

Tuan Minh Hoang et al.

Summary: This study characterized the excited state and ground state of negatively charged silicon vacancy (V Si -) centers in 4H-SiC using ODMR, demonstrating the potential for thermometric quantum sensors. The observation of inverted contrast between ODMR signals and the confirmation of temperature dependence in V Si - centers pave the way for future development of atomic-size thermometers inside SiC power devices. Through fabricating microscale dots of V Si - centers in a 4H-SiC p-n diode and measuring the temperature change induced by an injected current, the operation of thermometric quantum sensors was successfully demonstrated.

Dipolar spin relaxation of divacancy qubits in silicon carbide

Oscar Bulancea-Lindvall et al.

Summary: This study theoretically investigates the spin-induced spin relaxation processes of divacancy qubits in 4H-SiC, revealing the dependence of the longitudinal spin relaxation time T-1 on the concentration of point defect spins and the applied magnetic field. The results demonstrate that dipolar spin relaxation plays a significant role in limiting the coherence time of divacancy qubits in both as-grown and ion-implanted samples.

Nanotesla Magnetometry with the Silicon Vacancy in Silicon Carbide

John B. S. Abraham et al.

Summary: Silicon vacancy in silicon carbide is considered an ideal choice for spin-defect-based quantum sensors due to its high spin number and temperature-independent ground-state zero-field splitting. By optimizing anneal parameters and minimizing power broadening, nanotesla shot-noise-limited ensemble magnetometry can be achieved, showcasing a low-cost and simple approach to quantum sensing of magnetic fields.

Relaxation processes and high-field coherent spin manipulation in color center ensembles in 6H-SiC

Victor A. Soltamov et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates coherent spin manipulations of spin-3/2 color center ensembles in 6H-SiC crystal under high magnetic fields, showing room temperature control and a decrease in relaxation times T-1 and T-2 with increasing temperature and magnetic field strength. The experiments also reveal the potential for optically detecting the spin alignment between M-S = +/- 3/2 in spin-3/2 color centers through optically pumped silent M-S = +/- 1/2 sublevels, including the observation of Rabi oscillations.
