Synthetic Axion Response with Space-Time Crystals

Filipa R. Prudencio et al.

Summary: We demonstrate that space-time modulations can be used to achieve complex nonreciprocal couplings, particularly the elusive axion response. We develop an analytical formalism for homogenizing anisotropic space-time crystals in the long wavelength limit and find that space-time crystals with appropriate glide-rotation symmetry can exhibit a giant axion-type response, several orders of magnitude larger than in natural materials. The nonreciprocal axion response has interesting potential applications in optics, such as electromagnetic isolation, and can enable exciting forms of light-wave interactions.

An Archimedes' screw for light

Emanuele Galiffi et al.

Summary: This paper introduces the first instance of an optical Archimedes’ Screw, which captures and amplifies circularly polarized light of a specific handedness by using helical space-time modulations in a material. The researchers unveil new exact analytic solutions that can achieve chirally selective amplification within widely tunable parity-time-broken phases. This work merges the rising field of space-time metamaterials and that of chiral systems, offering a new playground for topological and non-Hermitian photonics with potential applications to chiral spectroscopy and sensing.

Crossing the light line

John Pendry et al.

Summary: In this study, we investigate the behavior of Bloch waves in gratings that are moving at near the speed of light. We propose a constant refractive index model and an effective medium approximation model, and demonstrate their accuracy. We also show the sudden inflation of pulse amplitude and reversal of propagation direction when a luminal grating is turned on.

Summary: This review comprehensively discusses the recent progress of time modulation in photonic metamaterials, including temporal switching, photonic time-crystals, and spatiotemporal modulation. It also reviews and provides perspectives on the applications of time modulation in nonreciprocity, synthetic motion, giant anisotropy, etc.

Cerenkov radiation in vacuum from a superluminal grating

Daigo Oue et al.

Summary: This paper theoretically predicts the generation of Cerenkov radiation (CR) in vacuum through spatiotemporally modulated boundary. By quantitatively evaluating the scattered fields, it is found that all fields are evanescent when the modulation speed is slower than light, while some become propagating when the modulation is faster than light.

First Principles Calculation of the Topological Phases of the Photonic Haldane Model

Filipa R. Prudencio et al.

Summary: Photonic topological materials with broken time-reversal symmetry exhibit nontrivial topological phases, supporting edge-state propagation when enclosed by specific boundaries. The Haldane model revealed the importance of broken time-reversal symmetry for quantized electronic Hall phase. In photonics, the Haldane model's magnetic field can be mimicked using a spatially varying pseudo-Tellegen coupling, leading to nontrivial phase transitions controlled by the amplitude of the pseudo-Tellegen parameter in photonic crystals.

Wave Analysis and Homogenization of a Spatiotemporally Modulated Wire Medium

Michael Kreiczer et al.

Summary: A homogenization theory for a spatiotemporally modulated wire medium is developed in this study. The unique modal waves and peculiar properties resulting from the spatiotemporal modulation, as well as the nonlocality, nonreciprocity, and anisotropy of the medium, are explained. It is shown that in certain cases, homogenization should be directly performed on the spatiotemporally modulated composite medium rather than on the stationary medium first.

Spatiotemporal isotropic-to-anisotropic meta-atoms

Victor Pacheco-Pena et al.

Summary: This paper introduces the concept of spatiotemporal meta-atoms with time-dependent properties, which manipulate scattered waves by exploiting temporal variations of permittivity. Numerical studies demonstrate the potential of this concept in real-time control of scattered waves by analyzing the impact of different parameters on its performance.

Homogenization Theory of Space-Time Metamaterials

P. A. Huidobro et al.

Summary: The paper introduces a general framework for the homogenization theory of space-time metamaterials, deriving analytical formulas for effective material parameters in the low-frequency limit for traveling-wave modulations. It shows how synthetic motion can lead to giant bianisotropy and how modulation speed and phase can tune the nonreciprocal response. The theory is applied to derive exact formulas for the Fresnel drag in electromagnetic media with traveling-wave modulations, providing insight into differences and similarities between synthetic motion and moving matter.
