Comprehensive review on various additive manufacturing techniques and its implementation in electronic devices

Nidhin Divakaran et al.

Summary: The recent advancement of science and technology in the world market has increased the demand for smart materials for various electronic device applications. The intrinsic challenges present in traditional manufacturing technologies in development of smart materials has enhanced the need to implement additive manufacturing techniques i.e., 3D printing (3DP) in electronic devices. The various 3DP techniques provide the designing freedom, innovation strategy, and minimization in waste with the capability to fabricate complex structures with rapid prototyping. The 3D printed structures have the tendency to overcome the challenges associated with their application in batteries, super capacitors, sensors and triboelectric nanogenerators (TENG) with excellent properties and output characteristics. The emergence of mechanical harvesting-based devices using 3DP has enhanced its versatility. The combination of burgeoning 3DP technology with advanced electronic devices has favoured the emergence of cutting-edge portable electronics with exceptional energy storage and internet of things. In this paper, an inclusive review of various 3DP techniques involved in electronic device application is carried out and the challenges involved in it have been addressed. The review focuses on the technical aspects of different 3DP techniques and their imperative role in manufacturing meticulous 3D printed structures for electronic devices. This paper also provides a summary of 3DP, as well as an assessment of its advantages and disadvantages, as a standard for future research and development in manufacturing cost-effective smart devices for industrial applications.

Indium Tin Oxide-Free Inverted Organic Photovoltaics Using Laser- Induced Forward Transfer Silver Nanoparticle Embedded Metal Grids

Sergey M. Pozov et al.

Summary: This paper presents the use of laser-induced forward transfer (LIFT) printing to fabricate silver nanoparticle (np) grids for inverted indium tin oxide (ITO)-free organic photovoltaics (OPVs). The limitations of using LIFT-printed Ag np grids in inverted ITO-free OPVs are addressed through an embedding process. By optimizing the metal grid design and incorporating an embedded Ag np grid, the power conversion efficiency of the inverted ITO-free OPVs reaches 11.0%.

Laser-Induced Forward Transfer (LIFT) Technique as an Alternative for Assembly and Packaging of Electronic Components

Filimon Zacharatos et al.

Summary: The latest trends in microelectronics chip bonding and assembly require advanced microfabrication technologies, with laser printing and laser sintering playing a key role in addressing these challenges, enabling high-resolution interconnections and conformal components. The use of laser-induced forward transfer technology allows for control over both lateral and vertical dimensions, aiding in the soldering process of heterogeneous components and finding wide applicability in the packaging and assembly of flexible and heterogeneous integration schemes.

Omar Adnan Abbas et al.

Summary: Laser processing is a highly versatile technique for post-synthesis treatment and modification of TMDCs. In this study, direct, spatially selective synthesis of 2D TMDCs devices with excellent properties was achieved using laser printing under ambient conditions, providing a simple and elegant process that can be scaled for mass production. This approach offers a promising alternative to complex, capital-intensive methods currently used in TMDCs synthesis.
