Maternal exposure to polystyrene nanoplastics during gestation and lactation induces hepatic and testicular toxicity in male mouse offspring

Tao Huang et al.

Summary: This study found that maternal exposure to polystyrene nanoparticles during pregnancy and lactation can cause toxic effects on the liver and testicles of mouse offspring, leading to impaired growth, oxidative stress, inflammatory cell infiltration, and disrupted glycometabolism.

Discovery and quantification of plastic particle pollution in human blood

Heather A. Leslie et al.

Summary: Plastic particles are widespread pollutants in the environment and food chain, and this study successfully developed a method to measure the presence of plastic particles in human blood. The study found four high production volume polymers in blood samples and demonstrated that plastic particles can be taken up by the human bloodstream.

Maternal Exposure to Polystyrene Micro- and Nanoplastics Causes Fetal Growth Restriction in Mice

Zahra Aghaei et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of maternal exposure to microplastics and nanoplastics on fetal and placental growth using experimental mice. The results showed that fetuses from dams exposed to plastics exhibited growth restriction in late gestation, with a 12% decrease in fetal weight at the highest exposure concentration.

Incineration-Generated Polyethylene Micro-Nanoplastics Increase Triglyceride Lipolysis and Absorption in an In Vitro Small Intestinal Epithelium Model

Glen M. DeLoid et al.

Summary: Despite the lack of knowledge on the health risks and impact on nutrient digestion and absorption of ingested micro-nanoplastics, this study found that the presence of polyethylene incineration-generated nanoparticles increased fat digestion and absorption. The analysis revealed a potential mechanism of triacylglycerol digestion by lipase on the surface of lipid-coated nanoparticles. Further research is needed to explore the underlying mechanisms and verify the results in animal models.

Estimation of the mass of microplastics ingested - A pivotal first step towards human health risk assessment

Kala Senathirajah et al.

Summary: The study estimated the average weekly intake of microplastics by humans globally and proposed a method to transform microplastic counts into mass values. These research findings will contribute to assessing the risks of microplastic ingestion on human health in the future.

Role of macrophages in fetal development and perinatal disorders

Olachi J. Mezu-Ndubuisi et al.

Summary: This article reviews the roles of fetal and neonatal macrophages in immune surveillance, innate immunity, tissue remodeling, angiogenesis, and tissue repair. Macrophages in the neonatal period are derived from embryonic, hepatic, and bone marrow precursors and play crucial roles in maintaining tissue homeostasis, immune responses, inflammation, and repair processes in various diseases. The manipulation of macrophage subsets may hold therapeutic potential in treating neonatal diseases.

Key principles and methods for studying the endocytosis of biological and nanoparticle therapeutics

Joshua J. Rennick et al.

Summary: Endocytosis is crucial for the cellular uptake of therapeutic nanomedicines, but current understanding and study of these mechanisms are limited. The use of nonspecific inhibitors presents challenges, and alternative genetic approaches may offer more robust insights into endocytic pathways. Future studies at the intersection of cell biology and nanomedicine are needed to improve nanoparticle therapies.
