Small-angle X-ray scattering: characterization of cubic Au nanoparticles using Debye's scattering formula

Jerome Deumer et al.

Summary: This article presents a versatile software package called CDEF, which is a Python extension used to calculate approximate scattering profiles of arbitrarily shaped nanoparticles. The software generates a quasi-randomly distributed point cloud and utilizes the open-source software DEBYER to efficiently evaluate Debye's scattering formula for small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). The study demonstrates that the quasi-random distribution provides faster convergence compared to a true-random distribution, especially at higher momentum transfer. The software's usability is shown through the evaluation of scattering data of Au nanocubes with rounded edges, and its accuracy is validated through comparison with analytically known form factors.

Correlative Analysis of the Dimensional Properties of Bipyramidal Titania Nanoparticles by Complementing Electron Microscopy with Other Methods

Loic Crouzier et al.

Summary: This paper describes a new measurement procedure for accurately determining the size and size distribution of bipyramidal anatase nanoparticles by using correlative SEM and AFM analysis of single particles. The exact orientation of the nanoparticles is crucial for extracting the real 3D dimensions, and two approaches are proposed to determine the geometrical orientation of individual nano-bipyramides. Additionally, Transmission Kikuchi Diffraction (TKD) has been tested for identifying the geometrical orientation of individual nanoparticles and Small Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS) can be used for measuring the nanoparticles in liquid suspension.

Influence of electron landing energy on the measurement of the dimensional properties of nanoparticle populations imaged by SEM

Loic Crouzier et al.

Summary: The study focused on the impact of electron landing energy on the measurement of nanoparticle sizes by SEM. It was found that the measured diameter varied with LE, and modeling of SEM secondary electron yield was used to relate this variation to the information volume in the material. An optimal value of LE was determined depending on the chemical composition and particle size to limit bias in SEM measurements.

Particle size distributions for cellulose nanocrystals measured by atomic force microscopy: an interlaboratory comparison

Michael Bushell et al.

Summary: Particle size measurements of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) are challenging due to their broad size distribution and irregular shape. An interlaboratory comparison (ILC) examined the data acquisition and analysis protocols of atomic force microscopy (AFM) to obtain a consensus distribution for CNC particle size. Variability in length and height distributions was observed among participating laboratories, but careful control of parameters allowed for consistent data sets to be obtained.
