New Perspectives for the Consolidation of Mural Paintings in Hypogea with an Innovative Aqueous Nanolime Dispersion, Characterized by Compatible, Sustainable, and Eco-Friendly Features

Sara Iafrate et al.

Summary: The consolidation of mural paintings in hypogea is challenging due to harsh microclimatic conditions and the limitations of traditional consolidant products. Organic compounds, such as acrylic emulsions, are bio-receptive while some inorganic consolidants, like silica-based products, lack compatibility with the original substrate. To overcome these issues, restorers from Istituto Centrale per il Restauro (ICR) decided to use a new aqueous nanolime dispersion called NANOLAQ, which consists of pure Ca(OH)(2) nanoparticles dispersed in water. This innovative and sustainable product has shown promising results in terms of paint layer cohesion and preservation of aesthetic features.

It has been used in consolidating wall paintings, stone artworks, and deacidifying paper relics, with researchers identifying challenges and proposing potential solutions to improve its performance. This review aims to promote further research on nano Ca(OH)(2) and its application in heritage conservation.

Summary: The study found that the concentration of ultrafine particles increased significantly during blast furnace operation and gradually decreased after the activity stopped. The ultrafine particles were mainly gathered at 10.4 or 40 nm, containing metal elements originating from slag and iron ore. The risk level of the ultrafine particles was high, indicating the existing control measures were insufficient.

Summary: The European Union has revised its chemical legislation to clarify technical data requirements for nanomaterials, with new provisions coming into effect from January 1, 2020. The study found that most of the information requirements and over 40% of the waiving criteria in the new REACH Annexes are supported by available methods. The study recommends further development of methods to fulfill the new regulatory requirements for physico-chemical characterisation and environmental fate and effects of nanomaterials.
