Effect of rGO/GNP on the electrical conductivity and piezoresistance of cement-based composite subjected to dynamic loading

Guodong Qi et al.

Summary: Graphene has good compatibility with cement-based materials and shows potential for real-time health monitoring of concrete structures. The conductivity and piezoresistive properties of graphene cement-based composites were investigated under cyclic compressive and tensile stress. Both tunneling effect and percolation phenomena played important roles in the electrical properties and electromechanical response of the composites. The composites filled with high oxygen content graphene or large sheet size graphene exhibited larger stress sensitivity coefficient, and graphene's excellent loading response ability laid the foundation for developing new smart materials based on graphene cement.

Functionalization as a way to enhance dispersion of carbon nanotubes in matrices: a review

L. Lavagna et al.

Summary: Three decades of scientific scrutiny on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have shown that challenges in handling and dispersing CNTs, as well as their limited interaction with other materials due to their structure, can impact technological applications. A thorough understanding of CNT properties and selecting appropriate dispersion procedures are essential for achieving desired nanocomposite properties. Advanced knowledge on CNT synthesis, functionalization methods, and dispersion techniques is crucial for addressing these challenges.

Ultra-high-performance cementitious composites with enhanced mechanical and durability characteristics

Muhammad M. Sadiq et al.

Summary: Surface functionalization techniques improved the compatibility of carbon nanomaterials with cementitious matrices, enhancing the performance of concrete. Introduction of 0.03% weight fraction of functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes significantly improved flexural strength, energy absorption capacity, and ductility of UHPCM. The moisture barrier qualities, abrasion resistance, and toughness characteristics of UHPCM benefited from the addition of carbon-based nanomaterials at less than 0.1% weight fraction, achieving improvements at a viable cost.

Mechanical properties of graphene nanoplatelets-reinforced concrete prepared with different dispersion techniques

Zhangfan Jiang et al.

Summary: This study experimentally investigates the effects of graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) on the mechanical properties of cementitious composites with coarse aggregates. Different dispersion methods including high shear mixing and ultrasonication are studied to disperse GNPs in water. Results show that the use of ultrasonication together with high shear mixing leads to the smallest size graphene sheets. Adding 0.025% GNPs can increase compressive strength by up to 17% in concrete mixtures without significant impact on flexural strength.

Mechanical properties, electrical resistivity and piezoresistivity of carbon fibre-based self-sensing cementitious composites

Lining Wang et al.

Summary: Carbon fibre is an effective material for enhancing the conductivity and piezoresistivity of cementitious composites. Unsized carbon fibre demonstrates stronger bonding with the cement matrix, better dispersive ability, and improved flexural strength and reduced electrical resistivity. Desized carbon fibre shows higher sensitivity and repeatability in terms of piezoresistivity behavior but with more noise interference. The best piezoresistivity behavior was observed in composites containing 3mm carbon fibre at 0.7 wt%, with an approximate 70% fractional change in resistivity.

Summary: In this study, graphene oxide (GO) was utilized as a dispersing agent to prepare highly-concentrated aqueous graphene nanoplatelet (GNP) dispersions, which were then used for printing graphene films on a flexible substrate with high conductivity. The stability of such dispersions mainly depends on pH value and the ratio of GO and GNP concentrations, and different nematic phases were identified through rheological investigation.

May the Piezoresistivity of GNP-Modified Cement Mortar Be Related to Its Fractal Structure?

Nanxi Dang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the piezoresistivity of cement mortar with different dosages of graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) and explores the microstructural mechanisms by electron scanning microscopy (SEM) and mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP). The incorporation of GNPs into cement mortar roughens the fracture surfaces and enhances the gauge factor (GF), with optimal piezoresistivity observed at specific GNP content. The fractal dimensions in macro and micro fractal regions change accordingly with GNP content, indicating the impact of GNPs on the fractal structure and piezoresistivity of the composite materials.
