Numerical Modeling of the Effects of Pore Characteristics on the Electric Breakdown of Rock for Plasma Pulse Geo Drilling

Mohamed Ezzat et al.

Summary: Drilling costs can be a significant portion of geothermal project investment, and reducing these costs through techniques like Plasma Pulse Geo Drilling (PPGD) can greatly decrease overall project expenses. This paper presents a numerical model to study how pore characteristics affect the efficiency of PPGD, which is a contactless drilling technique that uses high-voltage pulses to fracture rock without mechanical abrasion.

Simulation of Electrical and Thermal Properties of Granite under the Application of Electrical Pulses Using Equivalent Circuit Models

Kyosuke Fukushima et al.

Summary: This study developed a simulation method using equivalent circuits to better understand the crushing process in granite under high-voltage electrical pulses. Electric field distributions were calculated, along with other associated electrical phenomena such as heat and temperature changes. The importance of void volume in calculating electrical properties was observed, and the use of equivalent circuit models considering both electrical conductivity and dielectric constant accurately represented the electrical properties of granite under HV electric pulse application.

Equivalent Circuit Models: An Effective Tool to Simulate Electric/Dielectric Properties of Ores-An Example Using Granite

Kyosuke Fukushima et al.

Summary: The equivalent circuit model is widely used in high-voltage engineering to simulate the behavior of insulation/dielectric materials. In this study, equivalent circuit models were prepared to represent the electric and dielectric properties of minerals and voids in a granite rock sample. The values of the electric circuit parameters were determined from the known parameters of the minerals in granite. The developed equivalent circuit model can be applied to any other rock.

Dynamic mechanical responses and crack evolution of burst-prone coal with a single prefabricated fissure

Tong Zhang et al.

Summary: The mechanical responses and crack evolution of burst-prone coal under dynamic disturbance were investigated in this study. The results showed a positive correlation between the peak load and the fissure angle. The main cracks exhibited different morphologies under different fissure angles. In addition, the dissipated energy exhibited a four-phase pattern. These experimental results provide reference for preventing the occurrence of burst-prone coal in engineering practice.

Numerical and experimental study of the presplit blasting failure characteristics under compressive stress

Liyun Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the deformation characteristics and failure mechanism of deep hole presplit blasting (DHPB) under different stress conditions through numerical simulation and model testing. It suggests avoiding the blasthole connection orientation and compressive stress orientation from being at a 90-degree angle when performing presplit blasting, and aiming for the minimum principal stress orientation to be at a 90-degree angle to the blasthole connecting line.

Damage characteristics and laws of micro-crack of underwater electric pulse fracturing coal-rock mass

Xiankai Bao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the mechanism of crack initiation, damage characteristics and propagation law of high-voltage pulse hydraulic fracturing in coal. It shows that the cracks in coal-rock mass under high-voltage pulse discharge in water are mainly I-II composite cracks with tensile-shear damage, and their growth rate is related to Rayleigh wave speed. The crack propagation and extension in coal-rock mass are influenced by the preset crack angle, peak pressure of water shock wave, and direction of maximum principal stress.

Numerical study on the behavior of blasting in deep rock masses

Xiaohan Li et al.

Summary: The study found that in-situ stresses can increase compressive stress and reduce tensile stress caused by blasting load, leading to a decrease in the area of the crushed zone. Under anisotropic pressure conditions, the crushed zone is elliptical in shape, with the gap between the long and short axes widening as the stress difference between horizontal and vertical directions increases. Cracks tend to propagate in the direction of higher stress. Connecting cracks can form at lateral pressure coefficients ranging from 0.25 to 3.0 at a buried depth of 1000 m when blastholes are drilled horizontally, and increasing buried depths and the angle between blasthole centerlines can limit the formation of connecting cracks.
