Leaching recovery of rare earth elements from the calcination product of a coal coarse refuse using organic acids

Bin Ji et al.

Summary: Due to the increasing importance of rare earth elements (REEs), this study investigated the leaching of REEs from the calcination product of coal coarse refuse using organic acids. Experimental results showed that citric acid and DL-malic acid had the best leaching performances, and organic acids can improve the leaching recovery by complexing with the REEs.

Parametric study and speciation analysis of rare earth precipitation using oxalic acid in a chloride solution system

Ahmad Nawab et al.

Summary: Oxalic acid precipitation is a common step in purifying rare earth elements from concentrated leach solutions, but the presence of contaminants like Al, Fe, and Ca can decrease efficiency. Test results show that increasing oxalic acid concentration and raising solution pH significantly enhance REE precipitation efficiency.

A review of rare earth elements and yttrium in coal ash: Content, modes of occurrences, combustion behavior, and extraction methods

Biao Fu et al.

Summary: This review critically summarizes recent progress in the study of REY in coal ash, evaluating the content, speciation, and extraction potentials of REY. It discusses the different forms, distribution behavior, and transformation mechanisms of REY in coal ash, and proposes possible retention mechanisms of REY by aluminosilicate glass at boiler temperature. The modification of REY speciation in fly ash by reactions with flue gas components and current extraction techniques for REY recovery from coal combustion ash are also highlighted.

Partitioning behavior and mechanisms of rare earth elements during precipitation in acid mine drainage

Qi Li et al.

Summary: The recovery of rare earth elements (REEs) from acid mine drainage (AMD) is an important research topic. Selective chemical precipitation has been found to be effective in increasing the recovery rate of REEs. The presence of aluminum species reduces the adsorption capacity of REEs on iron precipitates, while the presence of ferrous ions competes with REEs for adsorption sites. Additionally, the pH value also affects the precipitation process of REEs.

Effects of contaminant metal ions on precipitation recovery of rare earth elements using oxalic acid

Wencai Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of contaminant metal ions on the precipitation efficiency of selected rare earth elements using oxalic acid as a precipitant. The findings showed that trivalent metal ions had a significant influence on the precipitation efficiency, while divalent metal ions had minimal effects. Additionally, anionic species were found to negatively affect the precipitation recovery of rare earth elements.

An acid baking approach to enhance heavy rare earth recovery from bituminous coal-based sources

Ahmad Nawab et al.

Summary: This study introduces a new method for recovering rare earth elements (REEs), especially heavy rare earth elements (HREEs), from coal at lower acid concentrations. Different treatment methods, including roasting and direct acid baking, were investigated and compared. The results showed that direct acid baking at a lower temperature provided the best recovery of both light rare earth elements (LREEs) and HREEs. Roasting followed by acid baking also achieved high recovery rates. The improved recovery was attributed to the dehydroxylation of clay minerals and subsequent release of REE-bearing minerals.
