Depositional setting, mineralogical and diagenetic implication on petrophysical properties of unconventional gas reservoir of the silurian qusaiba formation, northwestern arabian peninsula

Faisal AlGhamdi et al.

Summary: The Silurian Qusaiba Formation in the Tayma Quadrangle, Northwest Saudi Arabia, was extensively analyzed through field work and comprehensive laboratory work, including geochemical and petrophysical measurements, supported by petrographic imaging. The formation was classified into five lithostratigraphic units, with varying lithological compositions and mineralogical components. Inorganic geochemical indicators suggest different parental origins for the different subunits, while the depositional environment is identified as a warm and humid low salinity shallow marine environment. Petrophysical analysis revealed different pore systems affecting the petrophysical properties of the samples, with intergranular inorganic pores having the highest influence. Petrographic analyses confirmed the mineralogical and petrophysical findings.

Organic geochemical characteristics of Zeit source rock from Red Sea Basin and their contribution to organic matter enrichment and hydrocarbon generation potential

Yousif Taha Hadad et al.

Summary: The study compiled organic geochemical and petrological methods on organic-rich shale intervals in the Miocene Zeit Formation in the Red Sea basin, evaluating paleooxygenation conditions on preservation and sedimentation, as well as studying organic facies and their relation to hydrocarbon generation potential. Most Zeit shale samples are organically rich with high TOC content, showing favorable source rock characteristics with two dominant organic facies contributing to both oil and gas generation. Biomarker fingerprints reveal mixed organic matter with marine plankton/algal and microorganisms contributing to good preservation of organic matter, with maturity indicators placing the analyzed Zeit shales in a mature stage of oil generation.
