Differential impact of clay minerals and organic matter on pore structure and its fractal characteristics of marine and continental shales in China

Jiaqi Chang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of organic matter, clay minerals and organo-clay composites on the pore structure and pore complexity of shale reservoirs. The results showed that the type and maturity of macerals, illite, kaolinite, and organo-clay composites are the main factors influencing shale pore development. The study also found that different clay mineral types have different effects on shale pore structure and pore complexity.

Integrating advanced soft computing techniques with experimental studies for pore structure analysis of Qingshankou shale in Southern Songliao Basin, NE China

Bo Liu et al.

Summary: By analyzing the pore structure of unconventional shale reservoirs, this study used intelligent smart models to estimate the volumes of nitrogen adsorption and desorption. The results showed that the LSSVM model had the highest predictive accuracy, and clay minerals and potash feldspar had the greatest effect on the amount of nitrogen adsorbed and desorbed.

Influence of particle size on pore structure and multifractal characteristics in coal using low-pressure gas adsorption

Shasha Zhang et al.

Summary: Understanding pore heterogeneity is crucial for gas storage, transport, and recovery from coal. In this study, we investigate the effect of particle size on pore structures and multifractal characteristics of coal samples using low-pressure gas adsorption. Results indicate that smaller particle size leads to more homogeneous pore structures and higher pore connectivity, with crushing opening up more previously closed pores.

Pore structure, fractal characteristics and permeability prediction of tight sandstones: A case study from Yanchang Formation, Ordos Basin, China

Wenchao Dou et al.

Summary: Several fractal models based on MIP have been proposed for studying the fractal property of porous materials, but results from different models may not always be consistent. By combining various analysis techniques to study the pore structure and petrophysical properties of tight sandstones, it was found that different MIP fractal models usually give different results.

Compositional controls on nanopore structure in different shale lithofacies: A comparison with pure clays and isolated kerogens

Yujie Yuan et al.

Summary: The study classified shales into 12 lithofacies and compared the Goldwyer shales with other shale lithofacies, pure clays, and isolated kerogens using various techniques. Results show that the argillaceous OM-rich lithofacies have more interconnected pores with better hydrocarbon storage potential, while other lithofacies and isolated kerogens have their own characteristics in shale gas storage capacities.

Investigation into the Pore Structure and Multifractal Characteristics of Shale Reservoirs through N2 Adsorption: An Application in the Triassic Yanchang Formation, Ordos Basin, China

Zhikai Liang et al.

Summary: Understanding the pore structure and heterogeneity of pore size distribution is crucial for fluid mechanics and assessing unconventional resources. The Chang 7 lacustrine shale exhibits a complex pore system with mesopores contributing significantly to the total pore volume and surface area. The Delta alpha value is higher for MS lithofacies, indicating greater PSD heterogeneity, with significant relationships between multifractal parameters and pore structure parameters for both lithofacies.

Pore structure typing and fractal characteristics of lacustrine shale from Kongdian Formation in East China

Binyu Ma et al.

Summary: Nine core samples from the lacustrine Kongdian Formation in the Cangdong Sag, Bohai Bay Basin, China, were analyzed for their geochemistry and pore structure characteristics using various tests. The samples were divided into two groups based on hysteresis loops and pore structure parameters. The pore-throats of the samples were classified into four categories based on their Df-MIP values, and differences in D-f between different tests were attributed to sample sizes and pore types. Additionally, a positive relationship was found between D-f-(LN)P-C and various pore parameters in LNP tests.

Effects of lacustrine depositional sequences on organic matter enrichment in the Chang 7 Shale, Ordos Basin, China

Tianshu Zhang et al.

Summary: By analyzing core samples and well logging data, this study proposes a novel method based on parasequence division to predict organic matter enrichment in Chang 7 Shale. It identifies certain shale facies as more favorable for shale oil exploration, providing insights for determining target areas and enhancing inter-well prediction for deep-water shales.

Zhikai Liang et al.

Summary: Understanding the factors controlling anisotropy in shale with organic matter provides insights into gas transport and storage. Various techniques were used to study pore structure characteristics and heterogeneity in this study. The results show that clay and quartz contents significantly impact nanopore structure heterogeneity in the Shahezi shale.
