Fabrication processes of metal-fiber reinforced polymer hybrid components: a review

Junying Min et al.

Summary: The fabrication of metal-FRP hybrid components involves forming and joining techniques, with joining processes like adhesive bonding, riveting, and welding offering high precision but potential drawbacks. To address these challenges, forming processes are increasingly utilized for efficient and flexible fabrication. Additionally, surface treatments play a critical role in enhancing the interfacial bonding between metal and FRP for mechanical performance. Energy methods, such as laser technology, are seen as more effective and environmentally friendly alternatives to traditional mechanical and chemical treatments.

Experimental study on the wear behavior of B4C and TiB2 monolayered PVD coatings under high contact loads

Rafaela Casais et al.

Summary: This study investigated the wear behavior of PVD coatings and compared the performance of boron carbide (B4C) and titanium diboride (TiB2) coatings. The results showed that under high load conditions, both coatings exhibited abrasive wear as the main wear mechanism, while two-body abrasion was the main wear mechanism observed in the craters left by the tests. Comparing the two coatings, TiB2 performed better under high loads, as it did not suffer perforation and had a lower volume of removed material compared to B4C.

Prediction of TiAlN- and TiN-coated carbide tool wear in drilling of bidirectional CFRP laminates using wavelet packets of thrust-torque signatures

Tarakeswar Barik et al.

Summary: This study investigates the tool wear progression with an increase in the number of drilled holes using three different tools for woven CFRP composites. The TiN-coated tool was found to be advisable to use in industrial practices. The worn-out tool produces moderately enhanced thrust directly responsible for severe delamination damage, leading to thermal degradation and amplified roughness and circularity error. The low-frequency band force wavelet is a better indicator of tool wear, while the low-frequency band torque wavelet is better for the prediction of hole quality features.

Wear characteristics of multi-tooth milling cutter in milling CFRP and its impact on machining performance

Guangjian Bi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the wear characteristics of multi-tooth milling cutters with segmented right-hand helical cutting edge (SRHCE) and segmented left-hand helical cutting edge (SLHCE) under different feeds per tooth. It is found that SLHCE experiences slighter wear than SRHCE and their worn profiles are different. As tool wear worsens with longer cutting distance, machining qualities deteriorate and cutting force increases. Fewer burr damages are found on the top ply, and a lower feed per tooth induces severe tool wear and worse machining qualities.
